USF Women's Tennis moves to program-best 7-1 mark after defeating UMC, 9-0

Cougars roll to six straight set wins in singles and sweep doubles

Box Score SIOUX FALLS – The best start in school history continued on Sunday as the University of Sioux Falls Women's Tennis Team (7-1, 5-1 NSIC) rolled to a 9-0 victory against Minnesota Crookston (0-6, 0-6 NSIC) at the Huether Family Match Pointe. The Cougars, which concluded a six-match home stand, recorded a third consecutive victory to run their record to a DII program-best 7-1 start, including 5-1 in the NSIC.

USF, which will face city rival Augustana on Friday, March 2, finished the home stand at 5-1 including two wins this weekend with a 5-4 decision over Bemidji State on Saturday and the 9-0 conquest of UMC on Sunday.

"I couldn't be prouder of this group," said USF Head Women's Tennis Coach Kevin Grebin, who squad lost just nine total games against UMC. "We had a solid win over Bemidji State and followed up with a strong performance today. They were pretty dominant across the board today," he said.

At No. 1 singles redshirt freshman Chloe Jefferies pushed her record to 8-0, including 6-0 in NSIC play, which is the best start by any player in USF's DII era. She defeated Whitney Erickson of UMC, 6-1, 6-0, for her seventh straight-set win. In her last five matches, she has lost just nine of 60 games.

Freshman Megan Quandt recorded her first singles win of the season by taking a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Reanne Erickson of UMC. Jefferies and Quandt are now 6-2 in doubles, including 5-1 in the NSIC, rolling to an 8-3 win over R. Erickson/W. Erickson of UMC. It was their third straight doubles win.

Freshman Lexi Miller bounced back from a loss to BSU by recording a straight-set victory to improve to 4-4 overall, 4-2 in the NSIC. 

At No. 4 singles, Joelle Thorfinnson moved up a spot and continued her outstanding start with a straight set win to move to 7-1 overall, including 5-1 in the league. Thorfinnson, who won her third straight match, defeated Hanna Ruckheim of UMC, 6-1, 6-0. In her last three matches, she has won in straight sets, taking 37-of-47 games.

Miller and Thorfinnson improved to 5-3 at No. 2 doubles with a third straight victory. They moved to 4-2 in NSIC play with an 8-1 decision over Hanna Ruckheim and Adrianna Tiede of UMC.

Senior Cortney McCans moved to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in the NSIC with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Tori Koch of UMC. At No. 6 singles, freshman Rachel Klatt recorded a second straight singles victory with a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 verdict over Karli Renney of UMC.  Klatt is now 2-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.

At No. 3 doubles, Klatt and McCans teamed up for a second straight week and with an 8-0 victory over Koch and Renney of UMC moved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in league competition. In doubles competition this season, Klatt is now 7-1 overall and 5-1 in league play.
