Box Score 2 FREMONT, NEB. – A young University of Sioux Falls Women's Tennis Team had an outstanding opening to the 2018 season by sweeping to a pair of nonconference wins on the road on Saturday, The Cougars defeated Midland University, 5-4, Saturday morning and registered a 6-3 decision over College of St. Mary's in the afternoon in matches played at Fremont, Neb.
"I am exceptionally pleased with our effort today," said USF Women's Tennis Head Coach
Kevin Grebin, who is now 44-44 all-time in USF's DII era. "We worked through some things early and played really solid tennis. During the course of the day, we lost some tough tie-breakers but the experience will bode well for this team. It was a great start to the season," he said.
In her first collegiate matches at USF,
Chloe Jefferies stepped up as a solid #1 in singles. In both her singles matches, she recorded 6-0, 6-0 verdicts, winning 24 straight games. Also having a big day for USF was freshman
Joelle Thorfinnson, who finished 2-0 on the day with a pair of straight set victories at #5 singles. At #6 singles, the Cougars' senior
Cortney McCans also finished 2-0 with straight set victories in both matches.
On the day, USF was 7-5 in singles competition and 4-2 in doubles. The #3 team of freshman
Rachel Klatt and sophomore
Kelsie Sanders finished 2-0 in a solid day for that tandem. The #1 doubles team of Jefferies and Quandt finished 1-1 while the #2 doubles squad of freshmen
Lexi Miller and Joelle Thorfinson was also 1-1.
Next USF will open the NSIC season by hosting Minnesota State at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9 and Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. It will be the start of a six-match home stand.
