USF Tennis finished spring break trip at 2-2 after 7-2 verdict over Bloomsburg

Cougars take 4-of-6 singles matches and all three doubles against Bloomsburg

Box Score ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Sioux Falls Women's Tennis squad (9-4) finished its spring break trip 2-2 after winning a hard fought match with Bloomsburg (Pa.), 7-2 on Friday.

USF, which improved to 9-4 on the season, moved to 4-2 in nonconference matchups this season. The Cougars won all three doubles matches and captured 2-of-3 tie-breakers in singles to hold a 4-2 margin.

"We had a successful spring break trip where I felt we played some of our best tennis this year," said USF head coach Kevin Grebin, whose team will face Winona State on March 24 and Upper Iowa on March 25 in their final home matches of the season at the Huether Family Match Pointe. "Today, we worked hard and won a number of crucial points," he said. "It was good to see the aggressiveness and continuing improvement pay off."

For the eighth time this season, redshirt freshman Chloe Jefferies, who improved to 10-3 on the season, won a straight-set victory with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Cassidy Calimer. USF and Bloomsburg played to tie-breakers at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles. Freshman Lexi Miller moved to 6-7 on the season with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 decision over Giovanna Bonito of Bloomsburg. At No. 4 singles, sophomore Kelsie Sanders, who is now 5-6 on the season, registered a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 win over Isabella Sarquiz of Bloomsburg. Senior Cortney McCans, who fell to 5-8, dropped a heart-breaking 2-6, 6-2, 9-11 decision to Cassidy Wentz of Bloomsburg. The Cougars also lost at No. 2 as Megan Quandt (2-11) fell to Vitoria Nery of Bloomsburg.

At No. 5, USF also picked a win as freshman Joelle Thorfinnson moved to 9-4 on the season with a straight set 6-2, 6-3 win over Chloe Berridge of Bloomsburg.

In doubles, Jefferies and Thorfinnson (1-1), teamed together for a second straight day, pulled out a 9-8 victory over Calimer/Nery of Bloomsburg at No. 1. USF's new No. 2 team of Quandt/Miller also improved to 1-1 after defeating Bonito/Berridge of Bloomsburg, 8-1. At No. 3 doubles, Sanders and freshman Rachel Klatt had a big day with an 8-3 victory over Wentz and Catherine Gerrity of Bloomsburg. With the victory, Sanders/Klatt improved to 6-4 on the season.
