Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – Led by dominant singles play and control in doubles, the University of Sioux Falls Women's Tennis Team (11-5, 7-3) rolled to a 6-3 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win over St. Cloud State on Saturday.
The Cougars recorded their second straight win and third in the past four matches as they tied a school mark for NSIC wins with seven which was set in both the 2015 and 2016 seasons. USF, which has clinched at least a tie for fourth in the NSIC after being picked eighth in the preseason poll, will face Minnesota-Duluth on Sunday morning with a chance to clinch the No. 4 seed in the NSIC Tournament set for April 21-22 in Minnetonka, Minn.
"We had another standout performance today," said USF head coach
Kevin Grebin. "With wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, we set ourselves up. Then in singles, we had great efforts from Chloe (Jefferies), Lexi (Miller), Joelle (Thorfinnson) and Cortney (McCans). I was proud of everyone out there working and achieving today. Megan (Quandt) and Lexi (Miller) started things out for us and Kelsie (Sanders) and Rachel (Klatt) continued their strong play at doubles. We need to take this momentum into a big match with UMD tomorrow."
Against SCSU, the Cougars captured victories in two of the three contested doubles matches. While USF lost at No. 1 singles,
Megan Quandt and
Lexi Miller improved to 3-2, 2-1 in the NSIC, at No. 2 doubles with an 8-5 victory.
Kelsie Sanders and
Rachel Klatt moved to a team-best 8-4 on the season with an 8-4 victory. Sanders/Klatt are now a team-best 5-2 in league play.
Redshirt freshman
Chloe Jefferies led USF to a 4-2 advantage in singles with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Quintino dos Santos of SCSU. With the victory, Jefferies is now 13-3 overall and 9-1 in the NSIC. She captured her 11
th straight-set victory in 16 matches. In her last three matches, she has won 36-of-39 games.
The Cougars also captured singles wins from
Lexi Miller at No. 3,
Joelle Thorfinnson at No. 5 and
Cortney McCans at No. 6. Miller registered a straight set 6-3, 6-1 victory to improve to 8-8 overall and 6-4 in NSIC competition.
Thorfinnson continued her standout freshman season with a straight set 6-3, 6-4 decision in improved to 11-5 overall and 7-3 in league play. McCans, a senior, also won in straight-set fashion as she moved to 7-9 overall and 4-6 in the NSIC. She also claimed her 19
th career win in 37 matches.
