Box Score SIOUX FALLS— Led by the return of senior
Jackie Montes, the University of Sioux Falls Soccer Team (2-5-0, 1-3-0 NSIC) snapped a four-match losing streak with a dramatic 2-1 decision over Minnesota State University Moorhead at the USF Soccer Complex on Friday night.
Montes, who missed most of last year and the initial six matches this year due to injury, scored her first goal of the season in dramatic style, taking an assist from sophomore
Lindsey Power off a corner kick and with a header scoring the go-ahead goal. For Montes, it was her fourth career goal.
USF, which owns a 4-1-2 mark all-time against the Dragons, led 1-0 before MSUM tied it midway through the second half. Then Montes came up with the game-winning goal. USF broke a two-match drought without a goal and tallied two on Friday.
For the game, USF totaled 16 shots with seven being on goal. Junior
Lauren LaFavre led the team once again in total shots with five. Freshman
Aundria Vargas and sophomore
Lindsey Power recorded four shots a piece. Vargas and Montes both came away with crucial goals during the contest.
USF started out the game playing aggressively from the start. Vargas scored the first goal, her second of the season, at 12:23 off of a through ball from
McKayla Philippi. USF out-shot Moorhead eight to three in the first half.
The second half started out slow for the Cougars as MSUM scored on an indirect kick by Carly Jo Gramrath, which was deflected by Jessica Dallman at 55:15, to tie the score at 1-1.
Both teams' defenses played stellar soccer over the next 20 plus minutes until USF set up for the corner with under 10 minutes to play. Then, Power directed the ball in a crossing kick, which Montes headed into the goal at 81:20 for the go-ahead score.
The Cougars will next host Norther State (4-2-1, 2-1-1 NSIC) on Sunday, Sept. 23 for a 1 pm start time.
