Box Score SIOUX FALLS— Behind a pair of goals by sophomore midfielder
Lindsey Power in the first half, the University of Sioux Falls Soccer Team (3-5-0, 2-3-0 NSIC) surged passed Northern State (4-3-1, 2-2-1 NSIC), 2-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Sunday at the USF Soccer Complex. Power scored goals for the first time this year with her first-ever two-goal performance.
USF, which won two matches this weekend by the same 2-1 score (NSU, MSU Moorhead), controlled the match early while continually putting pressure on the Northern State defense. USF had 30 total shots throughout the contest, 20 of those came in the first half. Power led the team with seven shots, four of which were on goal and two found the back of the net. Junior
Lauren LaFavre added five shots, two of which were on goal.
The first half was controlled by the Cougars from the beginning of the game. The Cougars had opportunities early in the half that they didn't capitalize on. Power broke the tie at 28:32 when she took a pass from senior forward
Chessa Novotny and rifled a shot passed the goal keeper and into the back of the net for the first goal of not only the game but the season for Power.
Later in the first half Power found herself in front of the net with the ball after it redirected to her. She then took advantage of the opportunity and pushed the ball into the goal with her left foot from five yards out at 43:47 to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead to end the half.
The Wolves tried to mount a comeback effort in the second half and produced a goal in the 72
nd minute off the foot of Darian Leschewski, who tallied her fourth goal of the season. The Cougar defense would prove to be too much for the NSU offense that totaled three shots in the second half.
Junior goal keeper
Brayden Paul made four crucial saves during the game in order to hold on to the one goal advantage. This weekend, Paul allowed just two total goals as the Cougars put together their first two-game winning streak of the season.
USF will next travel to undefeated No. 12 Bemidji State (8-0-0, 5-0-0 NSIC) on Friday, Sept. 28 for a 3 p.m. start time.
