SIOUX FALLS – Records continue to fall as the No. 11 University of Sioux Falls Swimming Team put together another top performance in the pool at the Augustana Invitational at the Midco Aquatic Center on Friday. The Cougars broke two more school records and have five new marks in the past two days with 16 total NCAA cuts (14 B cuts) through the two days of competition.
As a result, USF sits third through the two days at the Augustana Invitational with 727 points. Only DI programs SDSU, which is first with 844.5 points and USD with 797 for second are ahead of the Cougars in the team standings. Host Augustana is well back of USF at 571 points for fourth and followed by U-Mary, fifth, 388.5 points; Iowa Central, sixth, 142; College of St. Mary, seventh, 89; and Iowa Lakes CC, eighth, 30.
'We had a solid day. And, I really believe we are adjusting to swimming fast multiple days in row," said USF Head Swimming Coach
Chris Hamstra. "We will try to step it up even more tomorrow," said Hamstra.
USF had both individual and relay highlights led by the 400 Medley Relay which won a title in 3:46.26 with an NCAA cut that will send that squad to nationals. The relay team, which recorded the fifth ranked time in DII, included
Elizabeth Spaans,
Chantal Kasch,
Ella Johnson and
Jenna Krahn. USF also claimed seventh place with a team of
Gigi Bario,
Abigail Ford,
Makenzy Kennedy and Giulia Marcon of 3:57.40.
In the 100 breast,
Chantal Kasch not only and an NCAA "B" cut but she broke a school record with the top time in DII at 1:02.10 in the prelims. She had a 1:02.26 in the finals which she won an individual title.
For the second straight day both
Ella Johnson and
Elizabeth Spaans had NCAA "B" cuts. Spaans, who now has two individuals and part of two winning relays in two days at the Augie Invite, won the 100 back in 55.55 for an NCAA "B" cut and the third ranked clocking in DII. Bario also placed in the event with a sixth place result in 58.41.
As for Johnson, who had four wins (three relays, 100 back title) in two days, claimed second in the 200 free with a clocking of 1:51.88 which was an NCAA "B" cut. Johnson's time is also third in DII. And, it means the sophomore ranks in the top five nationally in four events (100 back, 1
st; 200 back, 1
st; 50 back, 5
th; and 200 free, fourth). In that same race, Marcon had her second NCAA "B" cut in two days with a fourth-place finish in 1:52.53.
Leah Eagleton was eighth in 1:55.44 but swam a 1:55.16 in the prelims.
Kennedy continued to shine in her freshman campaign as she set a school record in the 400 IM with a clocking of 4:30.67. She just missed an NCAA "B" cut.
USF also claimed third place in the 200 free relay with a clocking of 1:34.44 with a squad of Spaans, Krahn, Eagleton and
Kyjana Webber. Spans led with 23.78 which was a "B" cut. USF was also fifth in the 200 free relay with a team of Marcon,
Ursula Demarquet,
Tori Bailey and
Valerie Childs, who had a clocking of 1:37.03.
