USF Tennis earns ITA Academic Team Award for third time in four years; seven SAs receive Scholar-Athlete honors

TEMPE, ARIZ. – For the third time in four years, the University of Sioux Falls Women's Tennis Team has received the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team honor, according to an announcement by the ITA. USF has also had seven student-athletes recognized as ITA Scholar-Athletes during that time span.

Under the direction of head coach Kevin Grebin, the USF Women's Tennis team collects their second straight All-Academic Team honor from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. To be eligible for the team award, teams must maintain a cumulative combined grade point average above 3.20 and USF was one of 138 Division II men's and women's tennis teams to earn the honor.

In 2017, 2018 and 2019, USF had seven student-athletes honored with five recognized in 2016.  The USF student-athletes honored in 2019 by the ITA included freshman Emily Applegate of Casper, Wyo.; sophomore Rachel Klatt of Columbus, Ohio; sophomore Megan Quandt of Henderson, Nev.; senior Kelsie Sanders of Gillette, Wyo.; junior Marie Schmitz of Sioux Falls, S.D.; sophomore Joelle Thorfinnson of Glenwood, Minn.; and sophomore Brianna Whisler of Woodbury, Minn. To earn individual honors as an ITA Scholar-Athlete, student-athletes were required to be a varsity letter winner, maintain a GPA of 3.50 or higher, and have completed at least two semesters at their current institution.

Klatt, Quandt, Sanders, Schmitz, Thorfinnson and Whisler were all named Academic All-NSIC in spring of 2019. Sanders and Schmitz were two-time NSIC All-Academic honorees (3.2 GPA). Klatt, Whisler, Sanders, Schmitz, and Quandt earned selection to the NSIC All-Academic Team of Excellence (3.6 GPA).

USF Tennis (8-9) advanced to the semifinals of the NSIC Championships for the second time in school history (2019, 2016) and was sixth seeded at the championship. USF upset No. 2 Winona State by a 4-2 tally in the opening round.
