MSU Moorhead Dragons (3-0-2, 1-0-1 NSIC):
The Dragons, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Christie Kopietz, are led offensively by junior forward Jensen Odegaard who has tallied two of the Dragons' six goals on four shots, two on goal. Odegaard has also assisted another Dragons goal.
Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Kayleigh Sedlacek has handled most of the minutes in the net in comparison to senior goalkeeper Kennedy Rodgers (355-to-135 minutes). Sedlacek has allowed the only goal of the season against the Dragons in a 2-1 victory over Michigan Tech.
The Dragons started the season with a 0-0 tie against the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers in which UNK outshot the Dragons 11-4. The match also saw four cautions issued, three of which to Dragons.
The Dragons stayed in Kearney for a Sunday morning match against Great American Conference and Central Region member Harding. The Dragons were able to get the offense going in that match, outshooting the Lady Bisons 9-to-5 and connected with the net three times.
In the aforementioned 2-1 victory over Michigan Tech in their home-opener, the Dragons were heavily outshot 25-to-9, but Odegaard's second goal of the season in the 52nd minute was the difference in the match.
Heading into NSIC play, the Dragons were able to squeak out a 1-0 victory against Minot State in Minot whilst again being outshot 12-to-10. The Dragons then traveled to Bismarck, N.D., to face the Mary Marauders, a match that ended in thee second 0-0 tie of the season for the Dragons.
Northern State Wolves (2-2-0, 0-1-0 NSIC):
The Wolves, under the direction of first-year head coach Ryszard (pronounced ri-SHARD) Gorski, have started the season 2-2, with one NSIC game being postponed due to poor playing conditions. The Scottish coach has looked to senior midfielder Stephany Estrada offensively, with Estrada, much like MSU Moorhead's Odegaard, scoring two goals and collecting an assist, all whilst taking seven shots, two on goal.
As a team, the Wolves have scored four goals on 41 shots (20 shots on goal) whilst allowing only two.
The Wolves started their season with a match against the NCAA Division I Green Bay (Wisc.) Phoenix, a game that was aired on ESPN3. The Wolves were able to shine in the national spotlight, with sophomore Gaby Roman scoring a 95th minute golden goal to stun the Phoenix in Wisconsin.
After defeating the Phoenix, the Wolves returned home to prepare for a match the following week against NAIA member Waldorf (Iowa) Warriors, who have a record of 1-7-1 and recorded their sole win on the season against USF's former Great Plains Athletic Conference foe Morningside. The Wolves doubled the Warriors' shots 16-to-8 in a 3-0 victory for the Wolves.
Fresh off two convincing victories, the Wolves faced a stout Ferris State Bulldogs team that ranks 11th in the national poll. The Wolves were capable of going toe-to-toe with the Bulldogs, narrowly being outshot 10-to-7, but a 29th minute goal was the difference in the Bulldogs' road victory against the Wolves.
The Wolves' conference-opener was slated to be a road trip to Bismarck, N.D., to face Mary, but weather causing poor playing conditions rendered a postponement of the match. The Wolves were able to get to play on Sunday when they went to Minot, S.D., to face the Minot State Beavers led by first-year head coach Chris Clements. The Wolves and Beavers kept it a very tight game, with the Beavers outshooting the Wolves by a narrow margin of 13-to-12. The Wolves again lost on a heartbreaker as the Beavers scored the only goal of the match in the 12th minute and held on.
Cougars' Corner:
Despite a misleading 0-4-1 overall record and 0-1-1 record in NSIC action, the Cougars, led by head coach Brittany Domino, have shown signs of improvement in the wake of injuries to key players. The Cougars youth have been able to acclimate to the pace of play and have started showing major contribution on all ends of the field. Offensively, the sole goal of the Cougars' young season was scored by freshman forward Jaycie Dillenburg against Missouri Western State.
The Cougars three goalkeepers, senior Brayden Paul, freshmen Alexis Wemhoff, and Holli Knudsen have all spent time in the net, with Wemhoff taking a majority of the minutes (216) to this point.
The Cougars started the season at home, facing the Fort Hays State (Kans.) Tigers to a 1-0 defeat to the Tigers. The Cougars then went on the road to Missouri to face Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western State.
The Cougars started conference play back at the USF Sports Complex when Wayne State and Augustana came to the USF Soccer Field. On Friday, the Wildcats and Cougars were in for a battle, with neither team capitalizing on their opportunities until the Wildcats scored in the 107th minute to get the win. Against the Vikings, the defense shined as Wemhoff made two spectacular lunges at the ball, one directly above her and one to the left side of the goal to keep it a 0-0 tie until the clock reached 110 minutes.
