SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – University of Sioux Falls head men's basketball coach
Chris Johnson has announced the signing of guard Matt Cartwright to a financial aid agreement on Tuesday.
Cartwright, who prepped at O'Gorman High School in Sioux Falls, S.D., was a 2018-19 All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference second team player and joins his brother Jack on the USF team. He is a transfer from Augustana.
"We are very excited to add Matt to our program. He's a proven player in the NSIC and has had great success," said Johnson. "Matt is a great fit for our perimeter with his shooting and overall skill set. Matt will also add leadership to our program. He's a mature player and young man who will bring a lot to our program both on and off the floor," added Johnson.
Cartwright has scored 817 career points (11.5 points per game) in 71 games (35 starts). In his career, he has hit 42.9 percent from the field (297-692) and 37.1 percent (144-of-383) from three-point range with an 88.8 percent (79-89) mark on free throws. Cartwright also has totaled 212 rebounds, 91 assists, 42 steals and 17 blocked shot.
In 2018-19, Cartwright was named all-league after leading Augustana with 463 points and a 16.0 points per game, which was 12
th in the NSIC. Cartwright, He scored a career-best 37 points against Minnesota Crookston. In starting 29 games for the Vikings, he also grabbed 4.2 rebounds and dished 2.1 assists while finishing fourth in the NSIC in three-point percentage at 42.5 percent. He was sixth in the league with 2.6 three-pointers per game. In 2019-20, he averaged 13.8 points (124 points) per game before his season ended due to injury. In 2021, he played just three games before injury ended his season. As a freshman he scored 215 points as he averaged 7.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in 30 games.
A 2017 graduate of O'Gorman High School, he was the 2017 South Dakota Mr. Basketball after averaging 20.2 points. During that senior season, he scored 505 points, including a school record 68 three-pointers, and led the Knights to the state title. He was a two-time all-city and all-state selection.
