SIOUX FALLS – The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) released its annual Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll earlier today with USF sitting at 9th overall and 6th in the NSIC South Division. Matt Cartwright has been named the player to watch for the Cougars as he enters his final year with the squad.

"We are excited about the mix of our group this season," said Head Coach Chris Johnson. "We have 10 returners that have seen NSIC action along with a group of new guys we expect to impact our program right away. We really like our depth at every position and expect to play a large number of guys over the course of the year. We are excited to work with this group as they have proven to be extremely hard working and talented."

The USF men's basketball team is coming off an 11-14 season, but look to make some drastic changes. Last season, the Cougars averaged 70.7 points per game with a season total of 1,767 points. Sioux Falls landed 5th in the NSIC for rebounds while averaging 36.6 rebounds a game totaling 915 on the year. With 12 returners, three transfers and four freshmen the Cougars look to lean on the experience and talent of this group to move up the rankings.

While averaging 19 points per game last season, Matt Cartwright tallied 436 points on the year putting him 3rd in the NSIC for scoring. Currently, Cartwright has 817 career points in 71 games and is shooting 42.9 percent from the field. The watch list honoree has shot 88.8 percent from the free throw line and 37.1 percent from beyond the arch. With his accuracy and ability to shoot from anywhere on the court, Cartwright has cetainly earned his player to watch status for the Cougars.

"Matt is a great teammate and makes those around him better in every way," said Coach Johnson. "As one of the best shooters in the country he is an extremely important player for us offensively. While improving in all areas of the game, Matt has proven to be one of the best players in the NSIC and we are excited to see what he can do this year."
