Moro and Warrior Named USF Athletes of the Week

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Following the past weekend's performances, USF Athletics is pleased to announce Alessia Moro as Female Athlete of the Week and Shawn Warrior as Male Athlete of the Week.

Moro helped lead #22 USF Swimming to a dual meet win over Concordia St. Paul 161-119. She was one of 8 swimmers from USF to claim the top spot in an event. Alessia won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:43.70. She out-touched her teammates Sarah Knox, who swam an 11:03.18, and Weronika Mrozek, who swam an 11:16.87, to take first but USF took the top 3 spots in this event. Alessia also finished runner-up in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:17.51.

Warrior led the USF Men's Basketball team to a 1-1 weekend losing to #12 Minnesota Duluth 81-56 and beating Concordia St. Paul 85-59. Shawn led the Coo in scoring with 16 points vs. Duluth and also tied for a team high 7 rebounds. Warrior also had a stellar performance against CSP. He scored 15 points, which is his 5th game in a row scoring in double figures. He also secured a career high and game high 9 rebounds against CSP. For the year, Warrior is shooting 52% from the field and 42% from behind the arc. He is averaging 12.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, and is playing 22.4 minutes per game and has started 8 out of 10 games for the Coo.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

·         Jack Thompson also had a solid weekend for the USF Men's Basketball team. He had a total of 25 points over the weekend with 22 of those coming against CSP. He led USF in assists against Duluth with 4 and had 4 vs. CSP which was 2nd on the team. Thompson also played the most minutes for the Coo in both games totaling 37 minutes against CSP and is averaging 34.4 minutes per game this season.

·         Redshirt Junior Noah Puetz had a standout weekend for USF Men's Basketball as well. He totaled 26 points over 2 games with a season high 19 of those coming vs. CSP. He also led USF in assists against the Golden Bears with 6 and added 5 rebounds. Noah is averaging 8.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game this season.

·         Inn She Yap of USF Swimming had a good showing against CSP. She started her day off with a win in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:51.95 with teammates Phoebe Mosley, Phini Schumacher, and Ursula Demarquet-Alban. Yap also claimed first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.25. She got second in the 50 breaststroke by .15 seconds, and she got 3rd in the 50 freestyle at 25.10.

·         Valerie Childs also had a standout day for USF Swimming. She took the top spot in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.65. USF took 2nd and 3rd in that event. Childs also finished 4th in the 50 freestyle and 2nd In the 50 butterfly. She was also a part of the 'A' 400 freestyle relay team that took first with a time of 3:37.75

·         Phini Schumacher got her day started off with a win for USF Swimming. She was a part of the 200 medley relay team that took first place. She also took the top spot in the 50 butterfly with a time of 25.83, just edging out her teammate Valerie Childs. Schumacher also was a part of the 'A' 400 freestyle relay team that took first place.

·         Another standout for USF Swimming was Ursula Demarquet-Alban. She was also a part of the winning 200 medley relay team. She took the top spot in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.74. Demarquet-Alban also got 2nd in the 100 IM and was a part of the winning 'A' 400 freestyle relay team.

·         Freshman Emily Groom had a stellar meet as well. She started the day getting 2nd in the 200 medley relay and got 2nd in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.75. Groom also was able to pick up a win in the 100 IM. She battled with teammate Demarquet-Alban but came out on top with a time of 1:02.14.

·         #11 Beau Klingensmith of USF Men's Wrestling defeated Wisconsin-Parkside's #17 Matt Chi on Sunday. He picked up USF's first points of the dual at 133-pounds. He won in a 5-2 decision which moves him to 10-2 on the year and 1-1 against NSIC opponents. This was Beau's second win of the year over a ranked opponent.

·         Freshman Daevon Vereen also picked up a win for USF Men's Wrestling vs. Parkside. Vereen wrestled up a weight class and defeated Tunde Oroye by a 16-3 major decision for USF's second victory of the day. This moves Daevon to 7-4 on the season and 1-1 vs. NSIC opponents.

·         Kami Wadsworth of USF Women's Basketball had a solid weekend for the Coo. She had 11 points both against Minnesota Duluth and Concordia St. Paul, which led the team in both games. She also led USF in rebounding in both games with 5 in each game. So far this season she is averaging 11.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game on 43% shooting from the field.
