USF Dominates Vikings with Balanced Attack

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The University of Sioux Falls (4-2, 1-0 NSIC) extended their winning streak against cross-town rival Augustana (3-2, 0-1 NSIC) to four games, claiming a decisive 65-52 victory at the Stewart Center. The Cougars controlled the game early, leading 32-22 at halftime, and never let the Vikings gain traction. Four Cougars scored double digits in the victory.

1ST HALF

The Cougars exploded out of the gate against Augustana, with Shawn Warrior setting an aggressive tone by driving baseline and finding Kyle Ingwerson for an opening three-pointer. Taylen Ashley capitalized on a defensive lapse, scoring an easy layup. Noah Puetz then showcased the Cougars' dynamic offense with a well-executed backdoor cut and a steal that led to Warrior's acrobatic layup, complete with some fancy ball English. At the first media break, USF led 9-5.

Though both teams initially struggled offensively, the Cougars' energy prevailed. Warrior continued attacking the rim, drawing fouls and sinking free throws. Puetz muscled his way through defenders, adding points as the team maintained offensive pressure. By the first break, USF had built a 13-9 lead.

The Cougars' offensive showcase continued as Ingwerson cleaned up on the boards and converted free throws. Kenji Scales added to the momentum with two free throws, while Warrior's creativity shone with an impressive up-and-under layup. Creighton Morisch's smooth turnaround jumper extended the lead, and Warrior's offensive rebound highlighted the team's hustle, pushing the score to 23-13.

In the half's closing minutes, Puetz and Scales continued their strong play. Puetz worked the left block, while Scales floated a basket over a defender to maintain the team's momentum. Ingwerson's three-pointer punctuated the scoring, sending USF into halftime with a commanding 32-22 lead.

USF shot 35% compared to Augustana's struggling 26%, and completely controlled the glass with a 25-10 rebounding advantage, including 8 offensive rebounds.

2ND HALF

The Coo came out of halftime with renewed energy, as Morisch battled the shot clock and spun through the lane for an artistic layup. Ashley, who had been sidelined with foul trouble in the first half, made his presence known with two critical three-pointers—one set up by Puetz's kick-out and another from the corner in front of the bench. Morisch used some powerful isolation moves on the block, and when Warrior found him streaking in transition, the resulting layup forced an Augustana timeout. The Cougars' 10-0 run had pushed their lead to 44-31.

Defensive intensity followed as Scales drew two offensive fouls, shutting down Augustana's momentum. Puetz added to the onslaught with a smooth reverse layup, while Morisch's court vision set up Scales for a perfect short corner jumper that extended the lead to 48-33.

Ingwerson continued his stellar play with a rebound putback, and Warrior's aggressive drives drew free throws. Though Augustana attempted to chip away at the lead with some backdoor cuts, Scales promptly silenced their hopes with a three-pointer off a flare screen, pushing the score to 54-43 with 6:55 remaining.

Morisch and Ashley worked together to set up an open jumper for Ashley, but Augustana responded with an old-fashioned three-point play and a wing three that cut the lead to 56-49. The Cougars momentarily stalled, turning the ball over on four consecutive possessions.

The team reset through Warrior's post-up play. He drew a foul and made both free throws, while Puetz restored the double-digit lead with a floater. Ingwerson's three-pointer off a Morisch handoff further solidified their control. Scales sealed the victory with late free throws, securing a 65-52 rivalry win—their fourth consecutive triumph over Augustana.
