Hanson Leads Young Cougar Squad in Season Finale

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – The University of Sioux Falls Men's Golf team concluded their fall schedule this week, competing in the Tulsa Cup hosted by Rogers State at The Club at Indian Springs. Against a loaded regional field, the young Cougar squad gained valuable experience and closed the semester with several individual highlights to build on heading into the spring season.

How It Happened

The Cougars battled through three rounds of challenging play on the River Course, which demanded precision on fast greens and tight approaches. After an up-and-down opening day, USF showed improvement in the second round led by steady play from freshman Charlie Hanson, who fired a 69 (-3) in round two to surge up the leaderboard. The Cougars' depth was tested throughout the event as the team continued adjusting to high-level competition and variable Oklahoma weather conditions.

Team Performance

USF finished the week with a combined team score that placed them among a competitive field that included several nationally ranked programs. Central Missouri (-12) captured the team title, followed by Harding (-10) and Pittsburg State (-2). The experience provided USF's all-freshman lineup another opportunity to grow their collegiate game while competing against some of the region's top Division II programs.

Coach's Corner

Head Coach Wade Merry reflected on the team's progress and perspective following the final fall outing:

"This fall can't be described as anything other than a success. I brought in an entirely new team of very talented, but very young golfers. It's an adjustment going from high school to college because these kids are playing unfamiliar golf courses, having to adjust to travel and missing lots of class, sleeping a lot of nights in a hotel. But it will get easier as they get accustomed to all of this.

Now, if you ask the kids, they will probably say they are disappointed in how they played and that's okay to feel that way. We are going to be even better in the spring. We are in good shape here."

Up Next

With the fall season complete, the Cougars now shift their focus to offseason training and preparation for the spring campaign. USF will open its spring schedule March 9–10 at the Bailey Ranch Golf Club in Owasso, Oklahoma.
