Sioux Falls, S.D. (October 31, 2009) - The University of Sioux Falls offense has been leaving defensive coordinators scratching their heads all season. Week 8 was no different in a 49-14 win over #12 Northwestern. Multiple playmakers were involved in racking up 462 total yards, but one individual performance took center stage.
On its opening drive, Northwestern used a balanced attack of pass and run to effectively advance the ball. After gaining 38 yards and three first downs, the Red Raider offense stalled and was forced to punt. The Northwestern punt was downed on the one yard line.
It was on USF's first possession where the
Lorenzo Brown show began. Brown rushed for seven yards, connected with
Brad Theilen for a 51 yard pass and catch, and then added a 20 yard run. After a
Ryan Lowmiller five yard carry, Brown finished the drive the drive he started with a 16 yard touchdown run. The 99 yard, five play drive took only 2:38 to complete.
Northwestern's ensuing possession took only 12 seconds. After an incomplete pass, USF's senior linebacker Nate Everett forced a fumble that was recovered by
Marlon Lobban on the Red Raider 30 yard line.
Brown opened the second Cougar possession with a 17 yard run and ended it with a three yard touchdown rush to put the Cougars ahead 14-0. In the first two USF possessions and 11:42 of the game, Brown accounted for 118 total yards (67 rushing, 51 passing).
The Red Raiders answered back with their first possession in the second quarter by conducting a five play, 48 yard touchdown drive to pull within seven points. The drive was aided two 15-yard penalties. The Cougars had 13 penalties on the afternoon.
The Cougar offense responded on the following possession with a six play, 43 yard drive. Brown utilized his favorite two receivers to orchestrate the team's third touchdown drive.
Jon Ryan was on the receiving end of 16 and 26 yard receptions.
Alex Anderson added a pair of 20 yard catches to set up Brown's third touchdown run of the day-this one coming on a 16 yard dash to pay dirt.
Sioux Falls would add another touchdown before heading to the locker room for halftime. Brown connected with senior tight end
Scott LeBrun for a 69 yard touchdown.
The tone of the second half was set at the kickoff.
Adam Lopez returned the kick 88 yards to extend the Sioux Falls lead to 35-7. The Cougars would add two third quarter Brown-Ryan touchdown passes of 5 and 6 yards.
The final touchdown scored came in the fourth quarter with a nine play, 23 yard possession.
Lorenzo Brown led the Cougars with 361 total yards (114 rushing, 247 passing).
Ryan Lowmiller tallied 99 rushing yards. Six receivers recorded a catch in the game.
Alex Anderson led the team with three receptions for 69 yards.
Defensively, Sioux Falls forced two turnovers. The first was the fumble recovery in the first quarter. The second came when
Andrew Schoenfelder intercepted a Northwestern pass in the USF end zone. Both turnovers led to USF touchdowns.
