The USF volleyball team was fended off by 13th-ranked Wayne State in a 3-0 loss Tuesday at Rice Auditorium in Wayne, Neb.
Wayne State (8-3) hit .204 on the night, compared to .064 for the Cougars (3-11).
Against Wayne State, the Cougars were silenced in the first two sets (25-15, 25-13) before dropping a hard-fought third set to the Wildcats, 26-24.
As the only player with a double-double, freshman outside hitter Emily Johnson (Platte) led the Cougars' attack with 10 kills and 12 digs, and junior outside hitter Chanda Goedken (Farley, Iowa) was behind her with six kills and six digs.
Freshman Charlee Nelson (Mitchell) dished 15 set assists. Senior Stephanie Moller (Lincoln) added 12 assists.
Freshman middle blocker Samantha Lovell (Bellevue, Neb.) continued to impress, putting up five kills, two digs, one solo block and a blocking assist.
Wayne State also topped USF in total team blocks (6-4). Sophomore libero Tashalya Person (Shawnee, Kan.) led the Cougars' defense with 15 digs.
USF heads to Bellevue, Neb. on Friday to compete in the Bruins Premier Classic.
