Cougars Comeback Twice to Sweep Franklin Pierce

The USF softball team came from behind twice to earn a sweep of Franklin Pierce Thursday afternoon in Clermont, Fla. USF overcame a 3-0 deficit in game one to earn a 4-3 win and battled back from a 2-0 hole to clinch an 8-2 victory in the nightcap.

The Cougars improved to 8-2 overall and have won seven straight games. Bailey Bouman (4-1) earned both wins in the circle for the Cougars.

Franklin Pierce jumped on Cougar starter Amanda Walters early in the opener, scoring two runs in the first inning on a trio of two-sackers and a passed ball. The Cougars went quietly in the second while the Ravens pushed across another run in their half of the frame to take a 3-0 lead.

USF's bats awakened in the following inning when Shelby Stewart led-off with a single and moved to third with heads up base running and a sacrifice by Shae Reinke. Stewart scored when a slow chopper by Katie Larson bounced over the shortstop's head for a hit and run RBI single. Bailey Bouman reached on a fielder's choice and Priscilla Quintana knocked a single to put ducks on the pond for Jenna Turner, whose scorching line drive just inside the right field foul plated Bouman. Kellen Dewey then strolled to the plate and ripped a keystone hit to clear the bases and put the Cougars ahead 4-3.

Bouman relieved Walters in the third and the game was uneventful until the fifth, when the Ravens opened their half of the frame with back-to-back walks. The maroon and white birds would be left stranded though; as the Cougars retired the next three batters to end the inning.

Bouman shut the door on the Ravens the rest of the way, scattering two walks in the final two innings to secure the 4-3 win. She picked up the victory, tossing five hitless innings of relief. She allowed five walks and recorded two strikeouts.

Dewey's 2-for-3, 2 RBI outing led the Cougar offense. Larson and Quintana were both 2-for-4. Turner finished the game 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Game two was scoreless until the top of the fourth, when the Ravens touched Bouman for two runs on three hits and two walks to go up 2-0. The Cougars cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fame as Turner posted a lead-off single and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk.

USF tied the game in the fifth and blew the game open with a si- run sixth inning that included a three run bomb by Turner. Elliott Lenz started it off with a lead-off single and a Stewart sacrifice moved her into scoring position. Reinke followed with a walk and Larson reached first on an error by the shortstop to load the bases. On the next play, another error by the Ravens put Bouman on first and allowed Lenz to score. Quintana roped the next offering by Raven to dead center for a two-run double. Turner was up next and got off to a 2-0 count before blasting a ball to right field that bounced off the top of the fence and out of the park for a three run homer.

It was the senior's first homer of the season. The Ravens refused to go quietly in the bottom of the seventh and loaded the bases with two outs, but a perfect throw by right fielder Amanda Walters found the glove of catcher Lenz, who tagged a Raven out at home plate to end the game.

Turner's homer capped off a big day at the plate as she was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Quintana was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and two runs. Bouman posted an RBI and Lenz was 1-for-3. Bouman (4-1) went all seven innings in game two, allowing two runs, all in the fourth inning, surrendered nine hits and struck out one with five walks.
The Cougars will face Oklahoma Christian (21-7) tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
