Pair of Walkoff Homers Doom Cougars

The University of Sioux Falls softball team received a frigid welcome on Friday from former conference rival Northwestern College, as the Cougars were swept by the Red Raiders in Orange City, Iowa.

The Red Raiders (19-10) used a pair of walk-off home runs to beat the Cougars (10-10) twice by the score of 4-2.

Both games went into extra innings.

The Cougars have now dropped seven straight.

In the opener, Bailey Bouman drew a two-out walk in the top of the third and scored on a homer by Priscilla Quintana to put the Cougars in front 2-0.

NWC would tie the game in the fourth after Alex Price reached on an error and, with two outs on the board; Sadie Mennen took the first offering from Cougar starter Bouman over the left field fence.

The game went into extra innings and was still tied in the bottom of the ninth after Bouman fanned Jordan Biehle for the second out.

The Red Raiders would rally in style, as Kara Nonnemacher followed with a single and Jillian Kleinhesselink homered to secure the walk-off win.

Bouman (5-6) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Quintana finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Senior Jenna Turner had two hits.

Game two was also decided in dramatic fashion. NWC held a 1-0 lead until the top of the seventh, when Cougar Janni Brylla led off with a triple and scored on a single by Shae Reinke.

After two scoreless frames pushed the game into extras, an RBI single by Katie Larson put the Cougars in front 2-1 going into the bottom of the tenth inning.

With one out, Kleinhesselink played the hero once again, homering to left field to give the Red Raiders the 4-2 win and a sweep of the Cougars.

Amanda Walters (4-3) was hit with the loss, giving up two runs on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Bouman was 2-for-4 from the plate. Larson and Reinke each knocked in a run for the Cougars.

USF will host its season opener tomorrow versus Dakota Wesleyan at Harmodon Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
