Cougars stand 7-1 in league play with a four-game winning streak

SIOUX FALLS --  The University of Sioux Falls Men's Basketball Team (11-3, 7-1 NSIC), which moved into sole possession of first place in the NSIC with a weekend road sweep at Wayne State and Augustana, will host Minnesota State (7-7, 5-3 NSIC) on Friday, Jan. 10 at 7:30 pm and Concordia St. Paul (5-7, 3-5 NSIC) on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 5:30 pm at the Stewart Center. 

USF, which was ranked sixth in the D2SIDA Central Region Poll, has won a season-high four straight games and is victorious in seven of its eight league games.  The Cougars, which has won 7-of-8 games to open the NSIC season, will meet Minnesota State (7-7, 5-3 NSIC) and Concordia St. Paul (5-7, 3-5 NSIC) for the second time this season. The Cougars defeated MSU on Dec. 7, 2019, 86-81 in Mankato, Minn. They also handed CSP, a 78-71 lost in St. Paul. However CSP has won two straight games to improve to move to 3-5 in league. On Friday, the Cougars face a Minnesota State team that has won four straight games. As part of the event Friday, the USF SAAC will host a Bean Bag Tournament to support Make-A-Wish. Entry fee is $10 per team.

Cougars open NSIC 7-1 after weekend sweep of Wayne State and Augustana on the road  
For the second time (2017-18) in three seasons, USF opened the NSIC season with three straight wins. Then, the Cougars split with UMD and SCSU  and registered a 84-69 road win over SMSU with a 77-65 win at Wayne State and a 65-59 decision over city rival Augustana to open the NSIC schedule 7-1 for the first time as an NSIC member.  As a result, USF leads the NSIC and the South Division. At 11-3, the Cougars are off to the best start in the program since the 2009-10 season when they were 12-3 en route to a 25-11 season at the NAIA level. In that season, USF advanced to the NAIA National Tourney where they lost in the second round to Walsh University, 98-90.  

In the win on Jan. 3 at Wayne State, USF had a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds from junior forward Austin Slater plus a career-high 16 points from Trevon Adams, who knocked in four threes for the first time in his career at USF.  Chase Grinde supplied 10 points, four assists and four rebounds as USF outscored the Wildcats, 47-37 in the second half.  USF tied a season-high with nine made threes and had just six turnovers. Before 2,371 fans at the Sanford Pentagon, the Cougars defeated then No. 24 (NABC) Augustana, 65-59, as freshman guard Jack Thompson scored 20 points. Thompson hit a career-high five treys and was 7-of-10 from the field.  He also had five rebounds and a career-best four steals. USF also had 10 points from both Austin Slater, who added eight rebounds, and Trevon Adams. Teathloach Pal had eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. After leading 34-31 at the break, the Cougars outscored Augustana, 31-28, on the Vikings' home floor. In the process USF held AU to its lowest point total on their home floor since 2012 when USF took a 70-58 win at the Elmen Center. 

In closing out 2019,, USF recorded an 84-69 road  NSIC win over SMSU in Marshall, Minn., as Thompson scored 18 points. For the first time ever, USF swept SMSU in a season series as a result of the 84-69 road win on Dec. 21. Since the two teams have been playing in the NSIC, the series is tied at 8-8 while SMSU holds the overall lead at 21-14 after USF's second straight win at Marshall, Minn. After a tight first half, USF had an 11-0 run midway through the second half to gain a six-point advantage (48-42, 13:20, 2nd half) and never relinquished the lead.  Thompson hit 6-of-12 shots from the field and knocked in 3-of-6 from three-point range while making all three of his foul shots. In addition, he had three assists and three steals with just one turnover in playing 39 minutes. Senior captain Devin Green surpassed double-digit points with 15 against SMSU. He made 4-of-6 field goals, including 1-of-2 from 3-point range and 6-of-7 at the foul line. Green had seven rebounds and an assist in 20 minutes of work. USF also had 14 points from junior forward Teathloach Pal, who made 6-of-11 field goals and added six rebounds with three assists, two steals and a block. Senior guard Milan Surlic also had 14 points. He hit 3-of-9 shots with two of them from three-point range and was 6-of-6 from the foul line. USF, which built as much as a 16-point lead (4:28, 2nd half, 78-62), led 33-32 at halftime before outscoring SMSU, 51-to-37 in the second half. The 51 points in a half was a season-high for USF.  

On Dec. 13, USF fell to UMD, 100-65, at the Stewart Center as the Cougars hit just 37.5 percent from the floor and made 24.1 percent from three. UMD hit 64.4 percent from the field and knocked in a sizzling 16-of-24 (15-of-20 at one point) from 3-point distance.  Against SCSU on Dec. 14, Austin Slater had 20 points to lead USF to a 73-67 win. USF, which led by as many as 16 points in the first half, hit 46.6 percent from the floor and had five triples while converting 14 foul shots. The Coo also limited SCSU to 39.3 percent shooting. 

Earlier on Nov. 21 at the Stewart Center, the Cougars won a 74-56 decision over SMSU in a game in which Head Coach Chris Johnson picked up his 200th career win at USF. In the win, Chase Grinde had 19 points and Will Lybaek added 14 points while Teathloach Pal added eight points and 13 rebounds for USF in a 74-56 win on Nov. 30.  USF hit just three triples but hit 23-of-46 field goals for 50 percent. In shots inside the circle, USF was 20-of-33 for 60.6 percent.  In USF's NSIC road openers, the Cougars finished 2-0 with a 78-71 win at Concordia St. Paul and a 86-81 victory against league favorite Minnesota State on Dec. 7 to move to 3-0 in league play. In the CSP win, Grinde had 20 points to lead the way while four other players scored in double digit points. Freshman Jack Thompson had 14 points as made four 3-pointers on seven attempts. Pal had his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 boards while blocking two shots and dishing two dimes. In the 86-81 win against Minnesota State, the Cougars led by 17 in the first half and had a double digit lead for much of the second half as they upended MSU for a second straight year at the Taylor Center. Grinde had 21 points and seven rebounds for USF, which also had 15 points from senior captain Devin Green and a career-high 14 from Troy Houghton who made all six of his field goal attempts.  In wrapping up the nonconference season, USF dropped a 94-69 decision to Minnesota Crookston as Harrison Cleary had 40 points. The loss dropped USF to 51-5 in nonconference game with Johnson. The loss to UMC ended USF's three game winning streak but USF has won four of five. In the setback to UMC, senior captain Devin Green had a career high in points with 16 and rebounds with seven.  

Also in the nonconference part of the schedule, Austin Slater had 16 points and 13 rebounds as the Cougars turned back Chadron State, 62-59, in the first game at the Dacotah Bank Classic. In game two, junior guard William Lybaek had 15 points, including a trio of threes, and Teathloach Pal added 14 points and eight rebounds as USF captured its third straight victory with a 77-70 decision over CSU-Pueblo, also at the Dacotah Bank Classic. 

In winning their 10th straight home opener, the Cougars handed Dakota State a 72-51 nonconference setback on Nov. 16 at the Stewart Center.  Earlier USF was 1-1 at the Central Region Challenge in Kansas City. USF defeated Lincoln University, 64-63, as Austin Slater had a career-high 22 points on Nov. 8. They also took a 62-55 loss to Pittsburgh State on Nov. 9 at the Central Region Challenge.

USF was 5-2 in November this year and 15-5 over the past three seasons. The Cougars finished  4-1 in December and 11-7 over the past three seasons. In January, the Cougars have a 2-0 record in January this year and stand 13-6 over the past three seasons. 

Breaking it down - USF leading NSIC in rebounding defense; 2nd in margin 
As a team, USF is averaging 71.5 points (13th, NSIC) and allow 69.1 per game (4th, NSIC) with 1,001 points scored and 967 allowed or a +2.4 differential.  The Cougars average 37.6 (527 rebounds) per game, which is fourth in the NSIC. In rebounding defense, USF is the league leader at 30.8 per game and sit second in the NSIC with 13.2 (182) offensive boards.  As a result, the Cougars sit second in the NSIC in rebounding margin at 6.9 (37.6-to-30.8). 

In league play, USF is averaging 37.4 rebounds per game and rank second in the conference in rebounding defense at 31.6 per game.  They are second with 12.6 offensive boards (101 total) through eight games.  In rebounding margin in league play, USF is second at 5.8 (37.4-to-31.6).  At 75.3 points per game, USF is 10th in the league  and fourth in scoring defense  at 71,0 for a 4.3 margin which is fifth in the NSIC. USF is connecting on 45.7 percent from the field for eighth in the league. USF is 10th in league-only games in field goal defense, allowing 44.0 percent.  While USF ranks at the bottom of the NSIC in overall games in three-point shooting (30.5 percent), they are 13th in league play at 33.6 percent. 

USF is averaging 5.9 threes per game and have a season high of nine against Minnesota Crookston and Wayne State. Seven times USF has seven or more triples in a game. 

In shots inside the arc, the Cougars have made 265-of-520 for 50.9 percent. The Cougars have a season high of 43 boards in a loss at Wayne State. Nine times USF has had a margin of six or more boards with a high of 22 against Southwest Minnesota State on Nov. 30 at the Stewart Center.  USF has won the rebound battle in 12 of 14 games. Ten times, USF has had six or more steals which includes the last nine games. Eight times, USF has over 70 points with a high of 86 points at Minnesota State on Dec. 7. When USF has scored 70 points or more, they have a 8-0 record.

USF leads CSP, 18-6, all-time in series 

Against the Golden Bears, USF has a 18-6 overall mark with seven straight wins. USF defeated CSP, 78-71, on Dec. 6, 2019 in St. Paul. The last USF loss to CSP was a 78-63 decision in St. Paul on Feb. 20, 2016. In a season sweep a year ago, USF won game two as Trevon Evans scored 29 points and led a hot-shooting University of Sioux Falls Men's Basketball Team to dominating 95-64 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Concordia-St. Paul (7-9, 2-8 NSIC) at the Gangelhoff Center on Jan. 12, 2019. Evans was one of four USF players with double-digit points. Senior forward Drew Guebert had 14 points, two rebounds, two assists and two blocks while redshirt freshman Chase Grinde had 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior guard Milan Surlic added 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists and did not commit a turnover in 24 minutes. USF opened on a 35-9 run and led 46-34 at halftime.  The Cougars, which led by as many as 33 points (95-62, 2nd half), outscored the Golden Bears, 49-32, in the second half for a 31-point victory which was the second highest margin this season. Led by Evans, the Cougars made 37-of-71 field goals for 52.1 percent as they shot over 50 percent for the fifth time this season. USF reached double-digits in made three-pointers as they hit 16-of-31 for 51.6 percent for the fourth occasion this year. USF's 16 treys was the second-best total of the season (17-34 vs Emporia State, Nov. 10).   USF had nine points and eight rebounds with a blocked shot from Teathloach Pal, who knocked in 4-of-6 shots from the field.  The Golden Bears, which was led in scoring by Noah Kannegiesser with 15 points and Cody Carlson with 14 points, made 10-of-24 shots from three-point range In the earlier game against the Golden Bears on Dec. 7, 2018, Drew Guebert had 28 and seven rebounds, Trevon Evans added 23 points and six rebounds while Justin Taylor had career-bests of 16 points and 15 rebounds in a 91-81 win at the Stewart Center. Trevon Evans led USF with 35 points and Pal Teathloach added 10 points on 62.5 percent shooting in a 79-68 home victory on Feb. 16, 2018.  In St. Paul, Minn., on  Jan. 20, 2018, the Cougars had 22 points from Evans and 17 by Aaron Rothermund in an 85-64 victory over CSP.  The Cougars, which hit 17-of-30 shots from the field in the first half, including 5-of-11 from three-point range, opened up a 41-28 halftime margin. The Cougars, which hit 54 percent (34-of-63) for the game, outscored the Golden Bears, 44-36, in the second half. In the 2016-17 season, the Cougars swept CSP, including a 73-69 decision at the Ganglehoff Center on Feb. 17, 2017.  Mack Johnson scored 28 points with seven rebounds while Zach Wessels and Daniel Hurtt both had 14 points. Bryndan Matthews led CSP with 24 points and nine rebounds. USF also took a 93-70 decision on Jan. 21 at the Stewart Center. Drew Guebert had 23 points and five three pointers while Clint Thomas added 19 points and three triples at USF was 12-of-24 from distance. In 2015-16, the Cougars set a school record by hitting 20 triples on 28 attempts in a 110-90 victory over CSP at the Stewart Center on Jan. 22, 2016.   In the match up in St. Paul, CSP took a 78-63 decision on Feb. 20, 2016. Matthews had 16 points and seven rebounds. Thomas led USF with 12.  

USF trails MSU, 17-5 in series 
The Cougars trail MSU, 17-5, in the all-time series after an 86-81 win at the Taylor Center on Dec. 7, 2019. It was USF's second straight win against MSU at the Taylor Center.  Trevon Evans and Drew Guebert led USF to a dominating 74-46 win over NSIC South Division Leader Minnesota State on Jan. 11, 2019. Evans scored a game-high 27 points with five rebounds, four assists, a block, steal and just one turnover in 35 minutes of action. Evans had seven field goals, two three-pointers and made 11-of-12 from the foul line with his second straight game of 27 points or more. Guebert had 18 points and seven rebounds with two assists. Against the Mavericks, Guebert made 7-of-14 shots from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. USF opened the second half on a 9-0 run and proceeded to outscore MSU, 44-26, in the second half. As a result, USF defeated MSU for the first time in seven games at the Taylor Center. The Cougars had a 54-40 margin over the Mavericks, including a 13-to-10 edge on the offensive glass. The Cougars, which didn't trail after MSU led 13-12 in the first half, held a 30-to-12 edge of points in the paint and a 14-to-9 margin in points over turnovers. MSU, which shot just 22.6 percent from the field on 14-of-62 shooting, was led by Quincy Anderson with nine points and five rebounds while Cameron Kirksey had eight points and six rebounds. MSU made just 6-of-33 shots from three-point range for 18.2 percent was 12-of-18 from the foul line. On Dec. 7, 2018 at the SC, USF dropped an 87-84 overtime decision to MSU. USF was led by Drew Guebert with 27 points and 10 rebounds and Trevon Evans with 21 points. Carlos Anderson had 30 points to lead MSU. On Feb. 17, 2018, Trevon Evans and Drew Guebert led USF to a 88-81 victory for their first win over MSU since moving to NCAA DII in 2012. Evans scored 33 points, including 18-of-21 from the free throw line, and Guebert supplied 28 points with nine rebounds. Guebert hit 4-of-8 from distance as USF was 7-of-20 from three-point land. MSU was led by Charlie Brown with 28 points and Chris Kendrix with 22. USF took a 99-82 loss to the Mavericks in Mankato on Jan. 19, 2018.  In that loss, USF had 28 points from Guebert and 24 by Evans. The key to the win for MSU was shooting 56.1 percent while USF was at 54.2 percent However, MSU, which was 20-of-32 for 62.5 percent in the second half, made 13-of-20 from three-point range. Interestingly, USF was 17-of-31 from the field in the second half and had a 33-30 rebound margin but made just four treys in 13 attempts.  

Quick look at MSU and CSP
The Mavericks face USF after four straight wins. Directed by Head Coach Matt Margenthaler, who recently won his 400th career game, the Mavericks stand 7-7 and 5-3 in league play. They are led by Cameron Kirksey at 19.8 points per game for fifth in the NSIC. The Mavericks average 79.4 points per game for fifth in the league but give up 73.4. MSU is second in the league in rebounding at 4.1 per game.  

Concordia St. Paul will face SMSU on Friday before a early evening encounter with USF Saturday. Interim Head Coach Eric Johnson has a team that stands 5-7 overall and 3-5 in the NSIC after winning games at Minot State and U-Mary over the past weekend.  The Golden Bears will be  led by Jordan Coblin who averages 17.8 points per game for ninth in the NSIC.  

Player Notes - 
Teathloach Pal continues to provide frontcourt presence
With four double-doubles in 14 games this season, junior forward Teathloach Pal is nearly averaging a double-double of 10.1 points (142 points) and 9.8 rebounds (137 rebounds) per game. Pal, who has 14 career double digit scoring games, was named the NSIC Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Nov. 18 after scoring a career-high 26 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in the win over Dakota State at the Stewart Center. Pal had a career-high 17 boards against Pitt State and registered double doubles in three straight games to open season.  He has one double-double in league play with 12 points and 13 rebounds in the road win at Concordia St. Paul. Six times this season Pal has double-digit rebounds and each times has had 13 rebounds or more.  

Slater enjoying a solid 2019-20 season 
Junior forward Austin Slater leads USF in scoring and is averaging 11.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. He has reached double digits eight times in 14 games. Slater has 11 career double digit scoring games and four double-doubles with eight games of double figure rebounds. He scored a career-high 22 points to lead USF to a 64-63 win against Lincoln and then had a team-high 14 points in a 62-55 loss to Pittsburg State. Slater had his first double double of the season against Chadron State on Nov. 22 after scoring 16 and grabbing 13 rebounds.  He had his first double-double in league play with 15 points and 13 rebounds in a win at Wayne State on Jan. 3.  

Freshman guard Jack Thompson making impact
In leading first place USF to a pair of wins on the road, freshman Jack Thompson averaged 13.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 4.0 steals per game. He was 10-of-20 from the field for 50 percent and knocked in 6-of-11 from three point range for 54.5 percent. In 77 minutes on the floor he had just two turnovers and also had a blocked shot. He scored seven points with four steals, a rebound and an assist as USF took a 77-65 road win. In a 65-59 road win at Augustana in a matchup for first place in the NSIC, he came up big for USF. Thompson scored 20 points with five rebounds, and four steals while hitting 7-of-10 from the field for 70 percent. He made a career-best five threes on seven attempts for 71.4 percent. He has two 20-point games this season and six double-digit point games. He averages 9.3 points overall but 13.1 points in league play.
