USF Swimming Team records 12th straight dual win in 148-56 win over city rival Augustana

Cougars capture 9-of-11 contested events, including seven individual and two relays

SIOUX FALLS – No. 12. The University of Sioux Falls Swimming Team continued to build on its historic dual win run by picking up its 12th straight dual win with a dominant, 148-56, victory over city rival Augustana on Friday at the Midco Aquatic Center. USF has not lost a dual meet since falling to DI Nebraska-Omaha in December, 2018.
 
Just like a week ago in a 170-86 win over Northern State, USF was led by a combination of its three All-Americans (Elizabeth Spaans, Chantal Kasch, and Jenna Krahn) and a talented overall roster, including several standout freshmen who have made noise early in the season.

"I am so very proud of our young women to start the weekend off with a win," said USF Head Swimming Coach Chris Hamstra, whose team will host a pair of quad meets with Augustana, Mary and Northern State on Saturday at 12 noon and 4:15 pm at the Midco Aquatic Center. "We saw huge improvements across the team from the first meet to the competition today. The 'rust' is coming off and I am excited about tomorrow," added Hamstra, who team now has defeated Augustana all six times in the all-time series dating to 2016.

Senior All-American Jenna Krahn led the way for USF with a pair of individual victories, and as a member of the winning 400 free relay. Krahn took home first in the 50 free (24.40) as she led four place winners in the top five. Sophomore Ursula Demarquet was second (24.77) with senior Gigi Bario, fourth (25.45) and senior Tori Bailey, fifth (25.62). 

In the 100 free, Krahn took the title in 53.92 and now has four individual titles on the season. She led a group of four who placed in the top six today. Demarquet was second (54.67) with Bailey, fourth (56.34) and senior Nina Groene, sixth (56.72).  In addition, Krahn anchored the 400 free relay, which clocked a 3:40.30. She was joined on the winning team by freshman Domenica Solano, Bailey, and freshman Kaylee Tringali, who placed in two individual events.  USF was also third in the 400 free relay in 3:48.80 with a team of sophomore Abigail Ford, senior Evelyn VanDeMark, Groene and senior Giulia Fazza Marcon

Another double winner individually was sophomore Valerie Childs, who captured the 100 fly in 59.64. USF dominated the event by winning the top four spots. Sophomore Makenzy Kennedy was second (1:00.03) with freshman Emily Solarski third (1:00.10) and freshman Paulina Ruelas, fourth (1:00.12). 

Childs, who was also a member of the second place 200 medley relay, won the 200 free in 1:56.70. Freshman ILinde du Plessis was fourth (2:03.60) in the event. Also on the second place 200 medley relay was Solano, Spaans, and Marcon. 

All-American Chantal Kasch was part of two wins (one individual and one relay) and a third place finish (2:116.31) in 200 IM. She was part of the winning 200 medley in 1:49.86. du Plessis, Solarski and Demarquet were also part of that winning squad. USF was also fourth in the 200 medley with Bario, Sydnie Saddoris, Makenzy Kennedy and Burke Henderson rounding out a team that clocked 1:52.75. 

Kasch won the 100 breast in 1:07.21 for her third individual win of the season. She led a dominant performance in the 100 breast as Spaans was second (1:08.51) with Ruelas, fourth (1:09.99). In addition, Sydnie Saddoris was fifth (1:11.42), Henderson sixth (1:11.81) and Kennedy, seventh (1:13.16) in the 100 breast. 

Spaans and Solano also picked up individual wins. Spaans, who now has three individual titles this year, took home the title in the 200 IM in 2:11.95. Ruelas was second in 2:13.55.  

As for Solano, she won the 100 back in 59.05 and led a 1-2-3-4 finish in the event by USF. du Plessis was second (1:00.41), Bario, third (1:01.21) and freshman Jaidyn Nelson, fourth (1:03.65). 

In the 1000 free, Groene led the way for the Cougars with a clocking of 10:45.57 to lead a second through fourth place finish. VanDeMark was third in 11:08.40 while Abigail Ford took fourth in 11:16.33. Ford also was second in the 500 free in 5:28.47. In that same 500 free, Tringali was fourth (5:33.83) and Alex Sanchez-Clark, fifth (5:35.18).
