Sioux Falls Drops Five Set Thriller at Augustana

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – In another classic chapter of the "cross-town" rivalry, the University of Sioux Falls Volleyball team jumped out to a two-set lead before ultimately falling 3-2 (25-22, 25-15, 22-25, 21-25, 14-16) to Augustana this afternoon inside the Elmen Center.

With the loss, the Cougars move to 10-9 overall and 5-6 in NSIC play, while the Vikings improve to 9-10 (3-8 NSIC).

Match Summary

The Cougars came out firing in the opening frames, hitting .333 in the first and .243 in the second set to grab a commanding 2-0 lead.

USF's balanced attack—powered by its veteran front line—kept Augustana on its heels early. However, the Vikings rallied behind a late defensive surge, winning the next three sets by narrow margins, including a 16-14 final set in front of a packed crowd of 641 fans.

Despite the heartbreaking finish, the Cougars produced 68 kills on .213 hitting, 84 digs, and 10 total blocks—showing once again they can stand toe-to-toe with any NSIC opponent.

Cougar Leaders

  • Sadie Voss paced USF with a match-high 17 kills, 17 digs, and 17.5 points, notching her 9th double-double of the season.

  • Courtney Holsteen added 14 kills and five digs, while Ella Walker recorded 12 kills and a team-leading seven blocks.

  • Abby Haus chipped in eight kills and two blocks, while Tatum Godinez tallied nine kills on .250 hitting and two blocks.

  • Haley Wolfe provided eight kills and a service ace, with Elise Gillen and Liz Kopp combining for 46 assists and 19 digs.

  • Gretchen Volk led the defense with 18 digs, while Maci Lerseth added 18 more and an ace to round out the back-row effort.

Team Notes

USF held Augustana to a .194 attack percentage and posted its sixth match this season with 10-plus team blocks. The Cougars have now played four five-set matches in NSIC play, going 2-2 in those contests.
