WAYNE, Neb. – The University of Sioux Falls Track & Field program opened the 2025–26 indoor season on Friday at the Wildcat Opener, delivering a strong early-season showing marked by event titles, breakout debuts, and a new school record from senior sprinter Tamia Horton. The meet featured more than 20 top-eight finishes across both programs, giving the Cougars substantial momentum as they begin their competitive slate.
Horton headlined the day with a historic performance in the 60-meter dash, running 7.39 to break her own school record and solidify her position atop the USF record board. She eclipsed her previous best of 7.42 from last season.
Head Coach Eric Chilson praised the team's competitive energy and unity.
"I'm proud of how we opened the season. We competed hard, supported each other, and set the tone for what's ahead."
Women's Recap
USF's women posted a balanced and competitive opening meet, highlighted by a historic sprint performance from Horton and depth across jumps, hurdles, and middle distance.
Horton's 60-meter dash win in 7.39 marked a new USF school record and one of the top early-season times in the region. Behind her, Gabbie Duval and Paige Haack advanced to the finals and placed sixth and seventh. Haack added another strong result in the 200 meters, finishing seventh in 26.85.
In the 400 meters, Tierney Faulk began her junior campaign with a runner-up finish in 1:00.10, continuing to build on a 2024 season that placed her inside the program's top-10 list in that event.
The Cougars' jump squad displayed impressive depth. Duval led USF with a fifth-place finish in the long jump at 5.35m, backed by Faulk, Cadence Nuttbrock, and Adison Renkly all finishing inside the top 10. The triple jump group placed six athletes in the top 10, paced by Kendra King in fourth with a mark of 10.90m.
Pole vault saw three Cougars finish inside the top six, highlighted by a runner-up finish from Peyton Hanson at 3.70m.
In the throws, Delanie Van Driel produced two strong season-opening marks with a second-place showing in the weight throw (15.67m) and a fourth-place finish in the shot put. Tobi Peterson added a third-place result in shot put at 12.90m.
Distance standout Mallory Salazar capped the women's efforts with a second-place time of 18:44.22 in the 5000 meters.
Men's Recap
The men's team opened the season with multiple event wins, several PR-level marks, and a standout day from the throws and jumps groups.
USF earned a victory in the men's 400 meters, with sophomore Brandon Stark running 48.65 to begin his season. Stark entered the year ranked inside the top-10 in USF indoor history for the event, and his opener strengthens his standing among conference contenders.
The throws crew displayed the strength and experience expected from one of USF's deepest event groups. Junior Andrew Edwards won the men's weight throw with a dominant mark of 18.61m–the best in the field by nearly a meter. The meet results list his winning throw at 61'1.25", putting him in 2nd on the USF top 10 list.
Edwards added a third-place shot put finish at 15.30m, while teammates Herbert Pimentel, Landen Schmidt, and Jackson Gacke contributed top-12 results in both throws.
