DES MOINES, Iowa – The University of Sioux Falls opened competition at the Drake Relays with a record-setting weekend highlighted by two new school records, an individual program record in the decathlon, and multiple strong relay performances against elite competition.
Jonny Cheney headlined the weekend by breaking a 55-year-old school record in the high jump during the decathlon, clearing 2.07m (6-9.50) to surpass a mark that had stood since 1971. Cheney went on to place sixth in the decathlon with 6,719 points, while the men's 4x400 relay team of Brandon Stark, Sabas DeHaan, Jensen Hyronimus and Micah Holien added another school record, clocking 3:12.98. Tamia Horton also delivered a standout weekend, placing second in the women's 100-meter finals after advancing through prelims.
Key Performances
Cheney's performance was the defining moment of the meet, highlighted by his record-breaking clearance in the high jump, which won the decathlon event and pushed him to a sixth-place overall finish in one of the nation's premier multi-event competitions. He also posted top-five decathlon finishes in the 100 meters, long jump, 400 meters and 1500 meters, compiling 6,719 points against a loaded field.
USF's men's 4x400 relay added another historic moment, setting a new school record with a 3:12.98 performance. The same quartet continued a strong season for the sprint group after already rewriting the program's 4x100 record earlier this spring. Horton continued her national-caliber outdoor campaign with a runner-up finish in the women's 100 in 11.62 after running 11.65 in prelims.
The Cougars also posted solid relay showings in the distance events, led by the men's distance medley relay of Bryson Canton, Jensen Hyronimus, Gage Grohs and Owen Janiszeski, which placed seventh. On the women's side, the distance medley relay took eighth, while the women's 4x800 and 4x100 relay teams added competitive performances against deep Drake Relays fields.
