Cougars Drop Sunday Doubleheader to (RV) Augustana

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Sioux Falls baseball team battled through tight late-game moments on Sunday at Sioux Falls Stadium, but Augustana used decisive late-inning swings to take both games of the doubleheader. The Vikings claimed game one, 5-2, before pulling away in the ninth inning of game two for a 14-4 win.

USF had opportunities in both contests, outhitting Augustana 6-4 in game one and tying game two at 4-4 in the eighth on a Cullen Verville solo home run. The Cougars were led offensively by Verville, Brady Schafer, Casey Sehr and Dominic Vogel across the two games, while Brady Baur and Taylor Morrissette each gave USF competitive starts against one of the top teams in the region.

Final Scores

  • Game One: Augustana 5, Sioux Falls 2
  • Game Two: Augustana 14, Sioux Falls 4

Game One – How It Happened

Game one opened as a pitcher's duel, with Baur working around early traffic and the Cougar offense putting runners aboard in each of the first two innings. USF had the bases loaded in the second after Justin Johnson was hit by a pitch, Sehr singled and Nolan Drossel walked, but Augustana escaped the threat.

The Vikings broke through in the third with an unearned run, using a USF error, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. Augustana added three more in the sixth, turning walks and one key single into a 4-0 advantage.

USF answered in the bottom half. Drew Miller opened the inning with a double, Johnson followed with a single and Verville drove in Miller with a base hit to center. After Sehr walked to load the bases, Drossel grounded out to bring in Johnson and cut the deficit to 4-2.

Augustana added one insurance run in the seventh, and the Cougars were retired in order in the bottom half.

Coach's Corner

"Tough ones today. We had way too many free passes in the first game & it came back to bite us in the late innings. We had plenty of chances early in the game to hang some runs but couldn't come through with a clutch knock. The second game we didn't play well but I thought my guys competed their butts off & did a good job of making some big plays on defense & staying in the game. We get a big solo home run from Cullen in the bottom of the 8th to tie it up. But we had maybe our worst inning of season in the top of the 9th & let them blow it open. Free passes, not being able to get an out on sac bunt, things that will kill ya late, in a tight game. We'll need to learn from these mistakes & be ready to go this last week. Need to elevate our game, from top to bottom if we want to make a run in the postseason."
– Head Coach Grant Hieb
