SIOUX FALLS, SD – With the ability to crack a joke at the best time, Kyla Gushard, a junior soccer standout for the University of Sioux Falls Soccer Team, is having fun despite challenges like COVID-19, which canceled the fall soccer season.
After a successful first two seasons, playing in nine games totaling 192 minutes in her freshman season and starting 10 of 17 games totaling 858 minutes in her sophomore season, Gushard has high hopes for her team's success in the future.
"The most rewarding part of competing is seeing all of the hours and work you put in finally paying off," said Gushard, who was named to the 2020 All-NSIC Academic Team. "There's no better feeling than accomplishing something you have been working towards for months."

Working hard is essential in sports, but so is having fun, according to Gushard. "I chose to attend USF because of the fun, loving, tight-knit environment that we have here," she said. "It was clear to see from day one and I wanted to be a part of that."
Gushard radiates energy and loves to have fun with her teammates.
"My teammates are some of the most loyal, fun, and hardworking people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing," said Gushard. "I am so blessed to call them not only my teammates, but my best friends."
Not only do her teammates appreciate her fun-loving spirit and love of the game, so do her coaches.
"Coach (Brittany) Domino and Coach (Ashley) Haflett are also some of the most hardworking people I know," said Gushard. "They put so much into this team and the players that I have no problem giving up just as much of my time and energy (and sleep) because I know they do the same."
Domino appreciates Gushard, not only for her work ethic, but for the energy she brings to the game.
"Kyla is the type of player that every coach loves to have as a part of their program, not only for her talent but for the impact she can have on those around her. She is able to see the game in a way that not many players can," said Domino.
Now an upperclassman, Domino utilizes Gushard's knowledge of the game to help guide the younger players.
"During her first few years as a part of our program she was learning how impactful she can be and now we are really trying to help her pass her understanding on to other players," said Domino. "Kyla has a very calm presence about her that allows everyone playing with her to take that mind set on. She always works hard; her teammates respect her and she is always good for a quick-witted joke when it is needed."

A firm believer in deciding your own fate, Gushard attributes her positive outlook on life to her parents, Aralea and John Gushard.
"My mom and dad taught me that sometimes the world is just simply unfair, but it is your mindset and what you do next that determines your happiness," said Gushard.
This glass-half-full mentality is also something Gushard brings with her to every competition.
"Before every game, I envision all the good things I am about to do," said Gushard. "I envision the perfect game and block out all the intrusive negative thoughts and worries."
With such a strong love for her friends and teammates, Gushard has found ways to connect with her teammates virtually during this challenging pandemic. "It is tough not to socialize like normal," said Gushard. "But, this spring I was using Facetime and making phone calls more than ever!"
Now, back with her teammates and back on campus, Gushard is keeping a fresh perspective on what will come in the future. Reflecting on her favorite times at USF with a promise for more in the future.
"My favorite soccer memory at USF is going into overtime against Augie in the fall of 2019," said Gushard. "The crowd had never been so rowdy and full of energy; it was the best environment to play in."
Gushard hopes to take that energy and replicate it in the future.
"Leave it to college to knock you down but then pick you right back up again," said Gushard.
Perpetually positive and upbeat - that describes Kyla Gushard.
