BROOKINGS, S.D. -- With an eighth place finish from freshman standout
Morgan Gehl, the University of Sioux Falls Women's Cross Country Team showed a solid team effort in their second meet of the season at the SDSU Classic. The USF Men's Team was again led by freshman
Ben Morrison who was 13th as they too had a solid performance in their second competition of the fall.
In their second meet of the season, the Cougars competed against three Division I teams at the Edgebrook Golf Course in Brookings, S.D. Led by an eighth place finish from Gehl (18:30.83), USF Women's Team finished fourth as a team with 88 points. Gehl's top-10 finish was 12 seconds faster than her ninth-place finish at the Augustana Twilight Meet (18:42.51), and the top-five finishers for the Cougars all bettered their times from last week at Augustana. The Cougars were the only NSIC team in the competition. The University of North Dakota won the competition with 39 points, followed by South Dakota State (43) and North Dakota State (51).
As for the men's team, they had another strong performance from freshman
Ben Morrison, who placed 13th in 26:02.00 in the 8,000-meter race to lead the Cougar men to fourth place with 90 points. USF was the only NSIC team in the competition. South Dakota State University won the competition with 15 points, followed by the University of North Dakota with 65 and North Dakota State with 74. This was USF's first 8,000-meter run of the season after running a four-mile course at the Augustana Twilight.
"We had another good team effort today," said USF Director of Track and Field/Cross Country
Doug Petersen, whose teams will compete at the Roy Griak Invitational on Friday, Sept. 24 in Minneapolis, Minn. "The weather was challenging with the heat and humidity" he said. "We had some racing goals we wanted to accomplish today and we did that. I'm proud of our team's efforts for both the women's and men's teams," noted Petersen.
