Led by Tyler Hiatt's school record in the shot put, USF Track & Field has strong showing at USD Early Bird Meet

lVERMILLION, S.D. -- Led by Tyler Hiatt's school record in the shot put, the University of Sioux Falls Track and Field Teams had another high-energy performance for the second meet of the outdoor season at the USD Early Bird Meet in Vermillion, S.D. today. The Cougars finished the day with seven top-ten finishes on the women's side and five top-ten finishes on the men's side.

Tyler Hiatt had an NCAA provisional mark in the shot put (see men's results below) and set USF 's outdoor mark in the shot put while Emma Hertz had NCAA DII provisional marks in both the discus and hammer throw (see women's results).

"Another good meet for USF. The student-athletes really stepped up and competed at a new level with the competition today. We had great intensity and determination," said USF Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Doug Peterson.

Highlights -- Women
Senior Emma Hertz had two more NCAA DII provisional marks in both the discus and the hammer throw. She placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 47.10 m (154-06 1/2), which would rank third all-time at USF outdoors but her mark of 175-10.25 a year ago is the school record. It was her second best throw of the season so far. Hertz also took sixth place in the hammer throw, with a throw of 55.79m (183-00 1/2), which is an NCAA DII provisional mark and the second-best throw at USF, just short of her own school record.

In the field events, Olivia Baumberger threw for 37.12m (121-09) to finish in eighth place in the javelin, while Emily Swanson finished in 14th place with a throw of 33.89m (111-02). Swanson also finished 19th in the long jump, jumping 5.08m (16-08), and 13th in the high jump (1.55m - 5-01). In the triple jump, Avery Bartunek jumped 10.25m (33-07.50) for 13th place.

On the track, KaNya Henderson brought home a second place finish for the Cougars in the 100 M dash, running a 12.19 -- not a personal best for Henderson but it is fifth all-time at USF. In the 1500 M run, freshman Morgan Gehl took 10th place for USF, running a 4:47.08 which is seventh all-time at USF. Khot Juac finished in 14th place with a time of 4:49.21, while Jessica Lutmer finished in 17th with 4:50.78.
