Led by Donahue's school record & All-NSIC efforts from Hiatt, Hertz and Swanson, USF Track and Field has big day at NSIC ODTF Championships

Joseph Donahue broke USF"s 100-meter school record while Swanson had a DII prov mark in heptathlon

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Led by three All-NSIC performances, a school record in the sprints by Joseph Donahue, four NCAA DII provisional marks and several program top 10 marks, the University of Sioux Falls Track and Field squad had a solid performance on day two of the NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday (May 13).

The USF Women's Team is fifth after two days with 22.50 points while the Men's squad is seventh with 17 points. Minnesota State leads the women's team rankings with 79 points with Wayne State in lead in the men's race with 43.50 points and just ahead of MSU Moorhead with 43 points. The league championship meet will conclude on Saturday at NSU.

"I was really pleased with our performances today and look forward to finishing strong on Saturday," said USF Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Doug Peterson. "It was really fun to see Joseph (Donahue) set a 100-meter record and come close to another in the 200 prelims. We have opportunity to do some nice things again on Saturday," he said.

School Record – Donahue has big day in sprints
USF also had a record-setting performance by sophomore sprinter Joseph Donahue, who qualified for the finals by clocking a school record mark of 10.62 meters in the 100-meter dash. He also qualified for the finals in the 200 meters with a 21.50 clocking. He finished with a personal-best and tied the second best outdoor 200 mark in school history with Dave Daniels (1973). He is just off the school record of 21.22 by Colin Koth in 2013 with an opportunity to better the mark in the finals on Saturday.

USF Meet Highlights
USF had a career-best and NCAA DII provisional mark from sophomore Emily Swanson, who scored 4,816 points in finishing third in the heptathlon. Swanson, who will earn All-NSIC recognition with a top three finish, registered the second best heptathlon mark in school history. It is 22nd in NCAA DII as of May 13. In the seven events, she scored 821 points in finishing third in the 100 hurdles in 15.16. Swanson had 759 points with a 1.62m-5-03.5 high jump for fourth in that event and was fifth at 26.65 in the 200 meters, which earned her 741 points. She finished 12th in the shot put for 499 points with the throw of 9.53 meters – 31-03.25 and finished fifth in the long jump as she scored 614 points with a long jump of 5.20 meters – 17-00.25. In addition, she scored a third place finish and 580 points with a personal-best of 35.38 m – 117-08 in the javelin and finished first with a personal-best in the 800-meters of the heptathlon at 2:22.22 for 794 points.  With a third place finish, she scored six points for USF in the heptathlon and added 3.5 points by claiming fifth in the high jump at 5-05.00

Also earning All-NSIC honors was USF's outstanding throwers Emma Hertz and Tyler Hiatt. Hiatt had an NCAA DII provisional mark in the shot put of 17.59 meters – 57-08.50 which placed second in the competition. It is not his personal best this year but his fourth throw of  56 feet or more this outdoor season. Hertz had an All-NSIC performance – the sixth of her career – with a third place finish in the hammer throw at 55.37 meters – 181-08, which was also an NCAA DII provisional mark. Hertz, who also finished fourth in the shot put with a DII provisional mark of 13.86 meters – 45-05.75, had her seventh hammer throw of 175 feet or better this outdoor season.

Also scoring for USF
In the women's pole vault, Kenna Comstock earned two meet points with a seventh place finish in the pole vault at 3.29 meters – 10-09.50

In the men's 10,000 meters, Micade Shumway scored in his first NSIC meet with a seventh place finish at 32:15.93. In the men's 3K steeplechase, USF placed two in the top seven and earned seven team points. Aaron Voigt was fourth in 9:32.99 while David Ecker was seventh in 9:42.20. While Tianna Voigt and Karlee Simmons did not score points in the women's 3K steeplechase both had personal-bests with top-10 program times. Voigt was 10th overall and shaved 15 seconds off her best at 11:39.99 for the fifth best mark in school history. Karlee Simmons was 12th with a 11:59.20 for eighth all-time at USF.

Qualifying for finals
Men - USF had a number of athletes advance to the finals on Saturday including Jakob Hanna and Caleb Rivera in the men's 1,500 meters. Hanna clocked a 4:02.40 in finishing fourth while Rivera was 11th in 4:03.64.
 
Women - In the women's 1,500 meters, Khot Juac was seventh in 4:43.96 and Morgan Gehl, ninth in 4:44.90 with qualifying times. Jessica Lutmer was 14th in 4:57.15 but did not advance. In the 100-meter dash, KaNya Henderson advanced to finals with a 12.20 qualifying mark In the 800 meters, Cassidy O'Meara was eighth in 2:18.33 for a qualifying mark, which was her personal-best and the eighth-best time in program history outdoors.
