Cougar Wrestling Closes out Jack Handcock Duals; #8 Klingensmith finishes 3-0

GOLDEN, COLO. – USF Men's Wrestling flew down to Colorado this weekend to compete in the Jack Hancock Duals hosted by Colorado Mines. The Cougars went 1-2 on the day with a win over Belmont Abbey. #8/12 Beau Klingensmith finished the day 3-0 for the Cougars with a ranked win over #19 Elijah Boyd.

(RV) SIOUX FALLS VS BELMONT ABBEY – W, 30-15 

At 125-pounds, Daniel Parra Jr. fell to Brett Balzan in a 15-5 major decision. Parra Jr. moves to 1-3 on the season and 0-1 in dual matchups.  

#8/12 Beau Klingensmith took on #19 Elijah Boyd at 133-pounds landing a takedown and a 4-point nearfall in the first period to take an early 7-0 lead.  Klingensmith tallied 2-points in the second period in a reversal, but gave up two reversals to Boyd to take a 9-4 lead while headed into the final period. Choosing bottom, Klingensmith quickly got an escape and would take the 10-4 decision victory to advance to 6-1 on the season and 3-0 in dual settings. 

At 141-pounds, #18 Jordon Oehme took on Will Cline. Oehme started hot with two takedowns in the first period to take an early 6-2 lead. With a quick escape and another takedown in the second, Oehme took a 10-2 lead as they headed to the third. Oehme recorded two more takedowns in the final period to finish the match with a 17-4 major decision victory and moves to 8-4 on the year and 4-3 in dual matchups. 

At 149-pounds, Lane Fink took on #14 John Carayiannis falling in a 1:37 pin. Lane moves to 10-9 on the season and 1-5 in dual matchups. 

Lincoln Fink took on William Nix at 157-pounds in a close 8-7 battle. Lincoln fell behind, 4-2, in the first before landing a reversal in the second to tie it up. After giving up a reversal in the final seconds of the second period, Lincoln fell behind 7-4 in the third before landing a takedown and escape in the third to take an 8-7 decision over Nix. Lincoln advances to 11-8 on the season and 3-4 in dual settings. 

Cooper Sanders defeated Caden Brandenburg at 165-pounds. Sanders opened the match with a takedown and two 4-point nearfalls to take an early 11-0 lead at the end of the first. With Brandenburg choosing neutral to open the second, Sanders landed another takedown before claiming the 3:19 pin to advance to 12-7 on the season and 3-4 in dual matchups. 

At 174-pounds, Grant Moraski took on Christian Arrington in a quick one period matchup. Moraski also opened the match with a quick takedown and 4-point nearfall followed by a 2-, 3- and 4-point nearfall to end the first period with a 16-0 tech fall. Moraski advances to 7-6 on the season and 3-2 in dual matchups. 

Daevon Vereen defeated Kyler Pickard at 184-pounds. Towards the end of the first period, Vareen landed a takedown that would put Pickard on his back and give The Coo a 2:36 pin to secure the dual. Vereen moves to 7-3 on the season and 2-1 in dual settings. 

At 197-pounds, Stetson Davis took on #11 Caleb Moore. Davis fell in a 17-2 tech fall and moves to 5-8 on the year and 1-5 in dual settings. 

To close out dual one, Isaiah Laguna took on Justin Wright. With just an escape from each wrestler, the match went into overtime where Laguna landed a takedown to close the match with a 4-1 sudden victory to advance to 10-6 on the season and 3-4 in dual settings. 
 

(RV) SIOUX FALLS VS #14/20 CENTRAL MISSOURI – L, 36-7 

Starting dual two, Parra Jr. took on #2/3Jakason Burks falling in a first period, 15-0 tech fall. Following his second match of the day, Parra Jr. Moves to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in dual settings. 

#8/12 Klingensmith opened up the 133-pound match against #13 James Wright with a quick takedown to finish the first period with a 3-1 lead. With no scoring in the second period, Klingensmith chose down to start the third period before taking a 4-1 lead with an early escape. After giving up a takedown, Klingensmith recorded an escape while tallying the riding time point to take a 6-4 decision over Wright and moves to 7-1 on the season and 4-0 in dual matchups. 

At 141-pounds, #18 Oehme took on Jack Lage. In a takedown-for-takedown first period, Oehme took the lead back in the second period with an escape to make the match 5-4 before adding three more with a takedown to end the second up 8-4. Starting in neutral position in the third, Oehme added his third takedown of the match to record what would be the final score of 12-4 and the major decision victory. Oehme is now 9-4 on the year and 5-3 in dual settings. 

Lane Fink fell to Garrett Lyons at 149-pounds in a 21-6 tech fall moving to 10-10 on the year and 1-6 in dual matchups. 

Lincoln Fink took on #6/12 John Ridle at 157-pounds falling in a 17-3 major decision. Lincoln moves to 11-9 on the season and 4-4 in duals. 

At 165-pounds, Sanders fell to Anthony Erickson in a 17-4 major decision to move to 12-8 on the year and 4-4 in dual settings. 

Moraski took on Garrett Deason at 174-pounds falling in a hard fought 5-2 decision. Moraski moves to 7-7 on the year and 3-3 in dual matchups 

At 184-pounds, Vereen fell to #12/12 Damon Ashworth in a 1:22 fall and moves to 7-4 on the season and 2-2 in duals. 

Stetson Davis fell to Brayden Dillow at 197-pounds in a 2:58 pin. Davis moves to 5-9 on the year and 1-6 in duals. 

Laguna took on Torin Forsyth at 285-pounds falling in a 7-4 decision and moving to 10-7 on the year and 4-4 in dual matchups. 

Jesse Garcia took on Hunter Tennison in an extra match at 285-pounds. Garcia fell in a 1:24 pin and moves to 8-4 on the year and 1-1 dual settings.
 

(RV) SIOUX FALLS VS #16/21 COLORADO MINES – L, 26-21 

Parra Jr. Fell to #14 Christian Lopez at 125-pounds in a two period, 15-0 tech fall. Parra Jr. Finished the day 0-3 to move to 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in dual settings. 

#8/12 Klingensmith sealed a 3-0 weekend with a 3:33 pin over Elliot Kim at 133-pounds. With a takedown and reversal in the first period, Klingensmith took an early 5-2 lead before landing an escape, takedown and 3-point nearfall leading to a pin in the second period. Klingensmith moves to 8-1 on the season and 5-0 in dual matchups. 

At 141-pounds, #18 Oehme fell in a tough 4-1 sudden victory loss to #4/5 Grayston DiBlasi. During a scoreless first period, DiBlasi scored first with an escape in the second period before Oehme responded with an escape in the third. Oehme fell in overtime to finish the day 2-1 while moving to 9-5 on the year and 5-4 in duals. 

Lane Fink picked up his first win of the day at 149-pounds with a 2:50 pin over Carson Dulitz. Dulitz scored first with an early takedown before Lane landed a reversal and a 4-point nearfall for the pin. Lane finished 1-2 on the day while moving to 11-10 on the season and 2-6 in dual matchups. 

Lincoln Fink fell to #9/19 Marcus Caro in a 15-2 major decision at 157-pounds. Lincoln finished the day 1-2 while moving to 11-10 on the year and 5-4 in duals. 

Sanders picked up his second win of the day with a 6:48 pin over Valor Buck at 165-pounds. Buck controlled the first period with a big 11-0 lead before Sanders landed a reversal in the second along with stalling points and a 4-point nearfall to secure the third period pin. Sanders finished 2-1 on the day to advance to 13-8 on the season and 5-4 in dual settings. 

At 174-pounds, Moraski fell to #12/14 Wyatt Reisz in a 12-5 decision to go 1-2 on the day and move to 7-8 on the year and 3-4 in dual matchups. 

Vereen's match ended early due to injury resulting in an injury forfeit to Avery Krippner at 184-pounds. Vereen finished the day 1-2 to move to 7-5 on the season and 2-3 in dual settings. 

At 197-pounds, Davis fell to #14/19 Ryan Cody in a 20-5 tech fall going 0-3 on the day. Davis falls to 5-10 on the year a 1-7 in dual matchups. 

Laguna secured his second victory of the day at 285-pounds with a 10-3 decision over Cade Whish. With a first period takedown, Laguna took a 3-1 lead while headed into the second period. With an escape in the second and a 4-1 lead, Laguna landed two more takedowns in the third period to finish 2-1 on the day. Laguna advances to 11-7 on the season and 5-4 in dual settings.

USF will head to (RV) Northern State on Friday, January 10 to take on the Wolves at 7pm inside Wachs Arena before heading south to compete in the Jet Duals on January 18. The Cougars will return to the Stewart Center on January 24th to host (RV) Minot State followed by #9/11 UMary on the 25th.
