Early Lead Slips Away as Cougars Fall to St. Cloud State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Sioux Falls (7-16, 3-6 NSIC) couldn't keep pace with a relentless St. Cloud State (10-9, 6-3 NSIC) offense on Thursday, falling 17-5 at Sioux Falls Stadium. Despite an early four-run surge, the Cougars struggled to slow down the Huskies, who used two big innings to take control.

How It Happened

Sioux Falls struck first in the second inning, exploding for four runs. Mitch Iliff led off with a single, setting the stage for Isaac Bonner, who launched a two-run homer to right field to put USF up 2-0. Jackson Yeager followed with a solo blast, making it 3-0 Cougars. Later in the inning, William Edwards reached on an error and came home on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Gouldin, extending the lead to 4-0.

St. Cloud State wasted no time responding, plating five runs in the third. After a pair of singles, Wyatt Tweet knocked an RBI single to put SCSU on the board. Ethan Navratil followed with an RBI hit, before Wilmis Castro delivered the crushing blow with a three-run homer to right, flipping the game in the Huskies' favor at 5-4.

The fourth inning saw St. Cloud take full control, adding five more runs. A bases-loaded walk and a two-run double from Tweet extended the Huskies' lead to 8-4, and a two-run double from Navratil made it 10-4.

SCSU kept the pressure on in the fifth, pushing across six more runs. Liam Moreno's RBI single and a run-scoring double from Castro highlighted another big inning as the Huskies stretched the lead to 16-4. They scored their final run in the top of the 6th inning to plate 17 runs in the game.

USF had a final bright spot in the seventh when Iliff launched a solo home run to left, but the deficit was too much to overcome as St. Cloud closed out the victory.

By the Numbers

  • Strong Start: USF recorded five hits in the first two innings, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before St. Cloud's big innings swung momentum.

  • Pitching Struggles: Jake Ammann (1-3) took the loss, allowing 10 runs (9 earned) over 4.0 innings. The Cougars used four pitchers, with Johnny Checheris throwing 2.1 innings relief to stop the damage late.
