Cougars and Wolves Trade Wins in Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Sioux Falls Cougars and Northern State Wolves met at Fossum Field in Aberdeen, SD, for a doubleheader this afternoon. The day ended with each team claiming a win—Northern State took Game 1 with a 6-0 shutout, and Sioux Falls responded in Game 2, rolling to an 11-3 victory.

How It Happened

Game 1: Northern State 6, Sioux Falls 0

The opener belonged to Northern State, thanks to a masterful performance from pitcher Carson Zimmel. He went the distance, throwing seven innings and allowing just three hits—a double by Jackson Yeager, a single from Dominic Vogel, and another from Noah Christenson. Zimmel struck out seven, walked one, and kept Sioux Falls off the board, stranding five runners.

Sioux Falls' offense couldn't get going, and their defense didn't help. Starter Jake Ammann held Northern State scoreless through four innings, striking out eight, but the 5th inning unraveled. The Wolves plated all six runs, sparked by hits and two Cougar errors. Ammann finished with five innings, allowing six hits and six runs (four earned), while Johnny Checheris tossed a scoreless 6th. Northern State managed seven hits, and made the most of Sioux Falls' mistakes to secure the 6-0 win.

Game 2: Sioux Falls 11, Northern State 3

Sioux Falls flipped the script in the second game, piling up 16 hits over nine innings to win 11-3. The Cougars scored in five frames—one in the 2nd, two in the 5th, three in the 6th, two in the 8th, and three in the 9th. Noah Christenson led the way, going 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, two runs and two RBIs. Mitch Iliff smacked two doubles and drove in three, while Jaxon Haase collected three hits and drew a walk. Nolan Drossel crossed the plate three times for the Cougars. Eight of nine starters notched at least one hit, and Dominic Vogel swiped a base.

Logan Anderson started for Sioux Falls, giving up one run on three hits over five innings with six strikeouts to earn the win. Eli Larson allowed two runs on six hits in two innings of relief, and Jace Coleman closed with two scoreless innings.
