Sioux Falls Handles Northern State in Friday Doubleheader Sweep

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Sioux Falls Cougars swept their doubleheader against the Northern State Wolves today at Fossum Field. A tight 2-1 win in the opener gave way to an 11-5 victory in the second game, boosting Sioux Falls to (12-18, 8-8 NSIC) while Northern State dropped to (5-18, 1-15 NSIC).

How It Happened

Game 1: Sioux Falls 2, Northern State 1

The day started with a pitchers' duel, as Sioux Falls edged Northern State 2-1 in a seven-inning contest. The Cougars struck in the 2nd when Casey Sehr singled and Noah Christenson doubled him home, plating two runs. That was all the offense Sioux Falls could muster, finishing with four hits—two singles from Dominic Vogel and a single from Sehr joining Christenson's double. They drew five walks and stole three bases, with Vogel, Jaxon Haase, and Ryan Gouldin each swiping one, but left eight runners on base.

Northern State kept it close, scoring once in the 7th on a groundout, but Sioux Falls pitching held strong. Jake Pruchniak went 5.2 shutout innings for the Cougars, allowing three hits and striking out eight for the win (3-3) and Jace Coleman earned the save while striking out two in the final frame.

Game 2: Sioux Falls 11, Northern State 5

The second matchup saw Sioux Falls break out for 13 hits in a 11-5 win over nine innings. The Cougars jumped ahead with a run in the 1st, added four in the 3rd—capped by William Edwards' three-run homer—and tacked on three in the 5th. Edwards finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Dominic Vogel went 3-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI. Noah Christenson added a double, Jackson Yeager had a double and an RBI, and Nolan Drossel drove in two.

Northern State kept pace early, tying it at 1-1 in the 1st. They added three in the 5th via a single, and one in the 7th when they scored on a wild pitch. Sioux Falls' Dylan Immel earned the win (2-1), giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits over five innings with seven strikeouts. Owen Weadge allowed one run over three innings, and Kaleb Klinkhammer closed with a scoreless 9th.

Up Next

Sioux Falls will look to continue this momentum with a game against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in Brookings, S.D. on April 1st, at 1:00pm at Erv Huether Field. They then head to Bemidji for a weekend series with the Beavers in NSIC action Friday, April 4th through Sunday, April 6th.
