Cougars Drop 11-3 Decision to the Lancers

YANKTON, S.D. - The Sioux Falls Cougars (22-23, 18-12 NSIC) dropped an 11-3 decision to the Mount Marty Lancers (26-17, 12-12 GPAC) in a non-conference matchup on April 21, 2025, at Riverside Field in Yankton, S.D. Despite an early lead and seven hits, the Cougars couldn't keep pace with Mount Marty's 15-hit offensive surge, including a decisive seven-run fourth inning, under clear skies at Bob Tereshinski Stadium.

Game Recap: Mount Marty 11, Sioux Falls 3

The Cougars struck first when Ryan Gouldin delivered an RBI single in the second inning to score Isaac Bonner for a 1-0 lead. Mount Marty quickly responded with a solo home run in their half of the frame to even the score.

The Lancers seized control in the third inning, manufacturing two runs via sacrifice flies to take a 3-1 advantage. Sioux Falls narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the fourth when Nolan Drossel's timely hit brought home Noah Christenson.

Any momentum the Cougars built was swiftly extinguished when Mount Marty erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Lancers battered Sioux Falls pitching for six hits, expanding their lead to 10-2.

Sioux Falls managed another run in the seventh on Christenson's fielder's choice groundout, but Mount Marty added an insurance run in the eighth to seal the 11-3 final.

Zach Peta took the loss for the Cougars, surrendering three runs on five hits across three innings with one strikeout. Reid Barnard provided a bright spot in relief, delivering 3.1 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and recording four strikeouts.

Gouldin led the Cougars offensively with two hits, as Sioux Falls collected seven hits total without committing an error. The Lancers' offense was relentless, amassing 15 hits in their error-free performance.
