Gutsy Finish Lifts Cougars Past First-Place Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Sioux Falls Men's Basketball team continued its recent surge on Saturday evening, earning its fifth straight victory with a gritty, statement-making 93–89 win over Minnesota Duluth, who entered the day perched atop the NSIC standings. In a game defined by relentless momentum swings and exceptional shot-making on both ends, the Cougars delivered poise down the stretch and clutch free-throw shooting to secure one of their most impressive wins of the season.

Game Summary

In a matchup that crackled with elite offensive execution on both sides, Sioux Falls separated itself through efficiency, balance, and ice-cold composure when it mattered most. The Cougars shot a blistering 52.6 percent from the floor for the game, narrowly edging Minnesota Duluth's 51.8 percent, while also holding an advantage from three-point range at 7-of-19 compared to the Bulldogs' 5-of-18. Neither team could shake loose at any point, as the game featured 25 lead changes and 15 ties with no double-digit advantage for either side—a true heavyweight battle from opening tip to final buzzer.

Free-throw execution proved absolutely decisive in the closing minutes. Both teams finished with 26 made free throws, but Sioux Falls consistently converted when the pressure mounted, particularly late, to preserve the razor-thin margin. The Cougars also won the rebounding battle 32–28 in a game where possessions were precious due to the scorching shooting percentages on both ends. Offensively, USF placed four players in double figures and received impactful contributions throughout the rotation, allowing them to weather Minnesota Duluth's scoring runs and ultimately close out the thrilling 93–89 victory against the NSIC leaders.

How It Happened

First Half

The first 20 minutes featured relentless back-and-forth action, with 10 lead changes and six ties as both teams traded haymakers. Sioux Falls connected on 16-of-32 shots from the field and knocked down two three-pointers while battling some early inconsistency at the free-throw line, going 6-for-11. Minnesota Duluth matched the Cougars' efficiency shot for shot, shooting 14-of-31 overall and keeping pressure on the rim to earn 16 free-throw attempts.

Rebounding was nearly even in the half, with Duluth holding a slim 19–18 edge and converting four offensive boards into six second-chance points. USF's balanced attack kept the Cougars within striking distance, as all players who saw the floor scored before halftime—a testament to the team's depth and unselfish play. Ashley led the way with eight points, while Madson and Hrncir added seven each as Sioux Falls trailed 41–40 at the break.

Second Half

Offensive rhythm remained red-hot for both teams in the second half, but Sioux Falls gained an edge with improved shooting and relentless physicality. The Cougars went 14-for-25 from the field and heated up from beyond the arc, hitting five of their 10 three-point attempts. Even more impactful was their ability to attack downhill with purpose, drawing fouls and converting a stellar 20-of-23 free throws in the half.

Minnesota Duluth continued to score efficiently, shooting 60.0 percent from the field and staying aggressive at the line, but Sioux Falls answered every push with a counterpunch of their own. Madson poured in 16 second-half points, nine coming at the free-throw line, while Hrncir added 15 points after halftime, including four dagger three-pointers. With 15 lead changes and nine ties in the final 20 minutes, the game came down to who could execute in crunch time, and the Cougars made the final winning plays to close out the pulsating 93–89 win.

Coach's Corner
