SIOUX FALLS -- University of Sioux Falls Director of Track & Field/Cross Country
Doug Petersen has announced the signing of 34 student-athletes who will continue their academic and athletic career at USF this fall. Of the 34 signees, 20 are signed to the women's team compared to the men's 14.
"We're excited about this incoming recruiting class. We've got a nice blend of athletes on the men's and women's side. Our overall depth is really good and we're looking forward to seeing what these student-athletes will be able to contribute to our program," said Petersen, the third-year director of USF Track and Field.
The signees join a USF squad coming off a strong season in 2018-19. The USF Men's Outdoor Track and Field squad took fourth at the NSIC Championship. In the spring outdoor season, second team All-American honors were earned by
Mason Phillips (10th) and
Zach Lundberg (12th) in the 1,500-meter run at the NCAA DII Championships. The women's outdoor team finished eighth at the conference meet while
Emma Hertz finished 19th in shot put nationally.
In the Indoor season, the USF men finished third at the NSIC Championship and 33rd at the NCAA DII Championships. At nationals, USF had a school record-shattering, All-American finish in the distance medley relay (DMR) with a team of
Mason Phillips,
Zach Lundberg, Trey Fergeson and
Billy Beseman, who finished fourth. The USF women finished sixth in the conference championship, with
Emma Hertz breaking her own school record in shot put and later garnering her first career All-American honor (second team).Â
Last fall, USF earned its first ever NSIC Men's Cross Country Championship as
Steven Brown became USF's second straight individual champ. The USF Men finished third at the Central Region Meet and a program-best fifth place at the NCAA DII nationals. At the DII meet,
Mason Phillips had a program-best seventh place finish, which earned him first team All-American honors. The USF Women claimed a program-best fourth place at the NSIC Championship before taking 17th at regionals.
