After a successful indoor campaign, USF Track and Field opens outdoor season at Wildcat Classic

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – After a strong indoor season, The University of Sioux Falls Indoor Women's and Men's Track and Field Teams is focused on continuing its momentum outdoors at the Wildcat Outdoor Classic in Wayne, Nebraska.

The Cougars will head to Wayne, Neb. on Friday, March 25-Saturday, March 26 to compete at the Wildcat Outdoor Classic, the first outdoor meet of the season. Click here for live results.

Last week, the Cougars were projected to finish seventh (women) and ninth (men), respectively, in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Track and Field Preseason Coaches Poll released Friday, March 18.

USF, which is led by USF Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Doug Petersen, will look to experience in the sprints, distance, throws and jumps and will use that to try and better their projected finish. The USF Men's Team was 12th a year ago with 21 points and have been picked to finish ninth. As for the USF Women, they placed seventh with 49 points at the 2020-21 Indoor Championships.

USF Women's Preview –
The USF Women's Track and Field Team will strive to better its seventh place finish of a year ago when the Cougars scored 49 points and had three All-NSIC performances from five-time All-American Emma Hertz, who is USF's Field Athlete to Watch. The Cougars have a both experience and talented youth across the roster as they work on continuing its move up the NSIC standings. USF finished sixth indoors with 37 points as the Cougars had All-NSIC performances from Emily Swanson (pentathlon, high jump) and Emma Hertz (shot put).

In the preseason coaches poll, USF was projected seventh. USF Outdoor Track Athlete to Watch is Morgan Gehl, a talented freshman, who was All-NSIC in cross country and recorded USF's second best clocking all-time indoors in the mile (5:03.03), 3,000 meters (10:10.35) and 5,000 meters (17:38.55).

Hertz will lead the way in the throws and ranks as one of the best ever at USF. A five-time All-American, including placing third in the shot put at the 2022 NCAA DII Indoor Championships, Hertz has 50 top-five placings in the indoor and outdoor throws with 19 titles in her career. Also look for Kamry Lindsey and Kayla Van Osdel to make an impact in the throws.  In the sprints, KaNya Henderson, who was all-American indoors two years ago, will lead the way in the 100 and 200 meters. She ranks first all-time at USF in the 100-meter dash (12.0) and the 200-meters (24.94) at USF all-time outdoors.

Sophomore Emily Swanson will be a force in the field events (high jump) and multi-event (heptathlon). She had NCAA DII indoor provisional marks in both the pentathlon and high jump. In the pentathlon she ranks second all-time at USF with 3,538 points and had a 2021 mark of 4,244 points in the seven-event pentathlon for third all-time at USF. By going 5-7 in the high jump indoors, she ranks second all-time at USF and can be a factor at the NSIC Championships in events outdoors. Also look for the women's team to get big contributions from Gehl and Khot Juac (third all-time at USF, 1,500 meters, 4:40.62) in the races from the 1,500 to the 5,000 meters.

Also Emma Kenkel is a solid performer in the 400-meters (ranks 10th all-time in the 400-meters outdoors) while the group of Annika AhoGracie Bucher and Cassidy O'Meara will continue to shine in the mid-distance. O'Meara (2:18.83) and Aho (2:20.51) rank top-10 in the indoors 800 and should continue to improve on those times as events move outdoors. Aside from Swanson, Natalie Meyers should be a contributor in the jumps as she ranks fifth all-time in the long jump (18-8, 2021) while Kenna Comstock will contribute in the pole vault.

"This Outdoor season for the USF women can be one of the best team finishes USF has had in recent years," said Petersen. "Our depth will help us score in many events at the league meet. Plus, the group is highly motivated and work to improve at each competition," he said.
