Cougars Wrap Up Day Two at NCAA Championships

Track & Field USF Athletics

Track Opens 2012-13 Campaign at MSU

Several members of the Sioux Falls men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2012-13 indoor campaign Saturday by competing at the Chuck Peterson Open, hosted by Minnesota State, Mankato at Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato, Minn.

The Cougars had four first-place finishes and first year head coach Reid Ehrisman saw a banner day from freshman athlete Jazzelena Black.

Black, a Oxnard, Calif., native, posted a victory in the women's long jump (5.85m) and took third in the triple jump (11.6m).

Kristen Townley was a toe behind in the triple jump, placing fourth with a leap of 11.59m.

Redshirt senior Colin Koth continued to dominate the open 400, as he crossed the finish line at 50.43, a full .61 seconds in front of runner-up Matthew Loehr of MSU-Moorhead. Kaleb Lindsey-Stevens placed seventh with a time of 53.06.

Lindsey-Stevens was also the men's long jump champion (6.69m). Rony Sieperda notched a leap of 6.22m, good enough for an eighth place finish.

Kayla Coffee won the women's pole vault (3.66m) to round out USF's winners of events. The Cougar women took seven of the top-10 finishes in the event. In men's pole vault, true freshman Jagger Gran was runner-up (4.63m) to USF track and field assistant coach Chad Aurich (4.78m), who competed unattached.

Kendra Knight blazed to a second-place result in the women's 400, clocking a time of 58.53. Leah Wensmann was eighth (1:00.96), while Brooke Stetzler finished 11th (1:03.40).

Haley Kruger was USF's top performer in the women's 600m run (1:42.77, 4th) and Kyle Tibke earned second in the men's event with a time of 1:26.09.

On the throws side, Marissa Whipple took eighth in the weigh throw (15.32m) while Hannah Steele and Callan Sawtelle went seventh-eighth, respectively, in the women's shot put.

Sophomore Jordan Bents notched solid efforts in both the men's weight throw (15.06m) and shot put (14.56m), taking second in both events.

USF women's "A" relay took third in the 4x400 relay (4:08.39), while the men finished second (3:30.26) to Augustana College (3:29.00). The women's “B” relay took seventh (4:28.94).

USF will return to action Jan. 12 when it travels to Sioux Center, Iowa to compete in the Dordt College Indoor Mini Meet.
