Offensive Fireworks Not Enough as USF Falls Twice to Hawaii Hilo

HILO, HAWAII – Sioux Falls (3-2, 0-0 NSIC) put up 18 runs across two games but couldn't overcome defensive miscues and free passes, falling 15-8 and 15-10 to Hawaii Hilo (3-4, 0-0 PacWest) in Saturday's doubleheader. 

How It Happened: 

Game 1 – Sioux Falls 8, Hawaii Hilo 15 

Sioux Falls fought back with big innings in the fifth and seventh but couldn't slow down Hawaii Hilo's offense, falling 15-8 in the first game of the doubleheader. 

After being held scoreless through four innings, the Cougars broke through with a four-run fifth and matched it with another four in the seventh. Noah Christenson provided a spark with a home run and two RBIs, while Ryan Gouldin doubled and drove in two runs. Isaac Bonner also contributed with a two-hit performance and an RBI. 

On the mound, USF pitchers struggled to contain the Vulcans, surrendering 15 runs on 15 hits and nine walks. Owen Weadge took the loss after allowing four runs in just over an inning of work. 

Game 2 – Sioux Falls 10, Hawaii Hilo 15 

The Cougars showed resilience again in game two, putting up 10 runs on six hits, but defensive miscues and a big fourth inning from Hawaii Hilo led to a 15-10 defeat. 

USF got off to a quick start with an early run in the first, followed by a two-run third and a five-run fourth to take the lead. However, Hawaii Hilo responded with consistent offense and capitalized on four Cougar errors. 

Christenson continued his hot hitting, driving in three runs with a triple. Bonner added two RBIs, while William Edwards knocked in a run with a double. The Cougars drew 11 walks but left 12 runners on base. 

On the mound, Eli Larson started and went two innings, but the USF pitching staff gave up 15 runs on 14 hits while issuing 10 walks. 

Up Next: 

The Cougars will take on NSIC foe Minnesota-Duluth next weekend in St. George, Kansas. They will play two double-headers beginning Saturday, Feb 15th at 1:30pm and concluding Sunday, Feb 16th beginning at 12:00pm.
