DENVER, COLO. – Sioux Falls (4-10, 0-0 NSIC) put up a strong offensive effort but couldn't keep pace with Regis University (10-8, 0-0 RMAC), falling 21-14 in a high-scoring battle on Tuesday. The Cougars racked up 16 hits and scored in six different innings but were unable to overcome a seven-run first inning by the Rangers.
How It Happened
Sioux Falls got off to a promising start with two first-inning runs on a sacrifice fly from Isaac Bonner and an RBI double from Myles Rees. However, Regis responded with seven runs in the bottom half, capitalizing on four walks, two hit by pitch, and clutch hitting.
The Cougars answered with four runs in the third, fueled by a two-run double from Ben Serie, a wild pitch, and an RBI single from Ryan Gouldin to cut the deficit to 9-6. Mitch Iliff blasted a two-run homer in the fourth to pull USF within one at 9-8, but Regis responded with a five-run fourth and a four-run fifth to put the game out of reach.
USF added late runs in the eighth and ninth, including an RBI double from Dominic Vogel and an RBI single from Iliff, but couldn't complete the comeback.
USF used nine pitchers in the game, with Owen Weadge (0-2) taking the loss. Kaleb Klinkhammer, Jace Coleman, and Myles Rees also saw extended action, while Jack Richeson tossed a scoreless inning to close the game.
