Led by a record-breaking day from Emma Hertz, USF Track and Field has solid opening meet at WSC Classic

Hertz has the second best shot put throw in DII with her weight throw ranked 7th

WAYNE, NEB. – Led by a recording-setting performance in the shot put from senior All-American Emma Hertz, the University of Sioux Falls Women's and Men's Team successfully opened the 2020-21 season at the Wayne State Indoor Classic on Saturday in Wayne, Neb.

Hertz, a senior from Sioux Falls, S.D., who has two indoor All-American honors, won both the weight throw and shot put and recorded NCAA DII provisional marks in doing so as USF TF/CC opened the season at the Wayne State Classic. In the shot put, she broke her own record (49-9.25) with a toss of 15.20 meters or 49-10.50 with the nation's second best throw. She also registered a top-three throw at USF with a winning toss of 17.92 meters or 58'9.50. The weight throw is the 7th best performance in DII.

"It was a very good start for us this season," said USF Director of Track and Field Doug Petersen. "We were pleased with the effort from Emma (Hertz) and the rest of throws squad. But the performance across the roster was outstanding," he said.

"In assessing everything today, the coaching staff was very happy with this performance from our student-athletes. It was a test to see where we were at and use this helps us assess where we are at for the upcoming meet at USD," added Petersen, whose team will compete at the Dakota Realty Invitational at USF in Vermillion, S.D., on Saturday, Jan. 23.

In total, the USF Women's squad picked up six titles and had 23 top-five finishes at the meet.
