1982 Baseball Team

In 1982, the Sioux Falls College Baseball team emerged from the losers bracket to win its first ever South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference (SDIC) championship after defeating Dakota State, 3-2. The team had to win five straight games including four on the final day of play to claim the top spot of the conference.

Throughout the season, the team averaged eight runs a game while combining for an overall batting average of .342, which was the 12th best in all of the NAIA. The Cougars finished first in the conference with a record of 15-11. Belvie Kennerly was named to the SDIC All-Conference team and eight other Cougars were named honorable mention.

Doug DeJong led the team with a .425 batting average while being named to the SDIC honorable mention list and the team MVP of the season. Mike Richardson was the Cougars most valuable freshman after he led the pitching staff with a 1.98 earned run average and 54 strikeouts while going 6-4 on the mound. Richardson was the only freshman to receive SDIC honorable mention honors.

The 1982 SFC Baseball team members include: Dan Clark, Doug DeJong, Dan Ellingson, Les Gunn, Doug Heidebrink, Mick Hoglund, Belvie Kennerly, James Kennerly, Chuck Lacina, Ed Mann, Todd Mathison, Mike Richardson, Luis Rivera, Dennis Simon, Ron Tordoff+, Dalen Uhlenhopp, Don Waring and Ron Zylstra.

The team was led by coach Kevin McDonald and Bruce Ferrie and Manager Ken ‘SID’ Kortemeyer.
