Beier, who earned a B.S. degree in physical education degree in 1962, was a standout football and basketball player for USF, as well as a non-stop supporter of Cougar Athletics until he passed away in October, 2012.
Originally of Parker, he was an all-conference quarterback in football and played on the district champion basketball team. He earned a scholarship to USF and became a memorable standout performer for the Cougars. As a sophomore in 1958, he was named to the All-South Dakota intercollegiate Conference squad at quarterback. As a junior, he changed positions but always excelled whether at halfback or quarterback, or on defense and special teams. Beier, who also punted and handled place-kicking duties, was named to the All Tri-State Conference squad as a senior. In that season (1960), he played a key role as the Cougars recorded its best season to that point, finishing third in the conference with a 6-2 mark. During his playing career as a Cougar, he also excelled in basketball, contributing numerous double digit scoring games.
At USF, he met his wife, then a cheerleader, and they were married in Winner, S.D. Shortly thereafter, they began careers as educators in the Sioux Falls Public Schools. From 1962-76, he was a physical education instructor at Cleveland Elementary. He transferred to Edison Junior High where he taught P.D. and coached. With Bev, Reed followed USF teams in their “Cougar Cruiser”. He and his wife, Bev, have four children – Melanie, Michele, Heather and Lance as well as several grandchildren.
