Few players have left as complete and lasting a mark on University of Sioux Falls football as quarterback Luke Papilion. From 2013 to 2016, Papilion, a true dual threat, not only rewrote the USF record books but also established himself as one of the most unique players in all of NCAA Division II history.

Papilion closed his career as USF’s all-time leader in passing with 9,106 yards and 79 touchdowns, while also ranking seventh in career rushing with 3,383 yards and 44 scores. His 12,489 yards of total offense—nearly 3,000 more than the next closest Cougar—stand as a testament to his remarkable consistency and versatility. In fact, he remains one of just two players in NCAA Division II history, and the only one in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, to surpass both 9,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing yards.

A three-time All-NSIC selection, Papilion’s accolades are extensive: 2014 NSIC Offensive Player of the Year, Mineral Water Bowl Offensive MVP, two-time Harlon Hill Trophy candidate, and nominee for the AFCA Good Works Team. He led the NSIC in total offense in 2014 and 2015, posting back-to-back 2,700+ yard passing seasons before closing his career with another 2,300-yard campaign in 2016.

Beyond the statistics, Papilion was the heartbeat of USF’s rise as a national contender at the NCAA Division II level. He guided the Cougars to multiple playoff appearances, including the historic 2016 season that saw USF claim its first-ever NSIC Championship and finish 12-1. His leadership, poise, and playmaking ability helped define an era of USF Football that lifted the program to new heights.

Luke Papilion’s name will forever be synonymous with excellence at USF. A record-setting quarterback, a fearless competitor, and one of the greatest to ever wear the Cougars uniform, his Hall of Fame career represents the very best of University of Sioux Falls football. Papilion now resides in San Diego, California and serves as a Senior Sales Executive for Matik.
